Renter Nation Critical of Spike TV's "World's Worst Tenants"
Group says TV show perpetuates negative image of renters.
Sioux Falls, SD, June 04, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Renter Nation, the country’s only website by, for and about America’s more than 100 million residential renters, announced today that they are “strongly critical” of the upcoming Spike TV series entitled World’s Worst Tenants.
Renter Nation CEO Bill Deegan said that the cable TV offering “contributes to society’s unfair negative image of residential renters. To single out close to 40% of our nation’s population for ridicule by association perpetuates an inaccurate and unacceptable stereotype of renters as second class citizens.” Mr. Deegan has called on advertisers of the show to re-consider their support and involvement with the show and “demonstrate their respect for renters.”
Mr. Deegan added that among many reasons, Renter Nation was formed to fight negative cultural images of renters. The Renter Nation website promotes renting as a better lifestyle choice reflecting societal trends toward more sustainable communities and growth, and celebrates renters as active, contributing members of society.
“There are more than 100 million residential renters in the U.S. As proud renters, we’re not going to sit back any longer and allow ourselves to be treated unfairly by the major media, cultural institutions or governmental policy,” Mr. Deegan added.
Renter Nation’s COO Steve Crawford noted that the group works with tenant advocates as well as members of the multi-family housing industry to elevate the status of renters by encouraging common interests and our “mutual mission to recognize the contributions renters have made, and continue to make, to our communities and our country.”
“Shows such as Spike TV’s World’s Worst Tenants do nothing but perpetuate negative images that are based on isolated instances and do not reflect the positive attributes of the millions of hard working Americans who rent their homes,” Mr. Crawford concluded.
Renter Nation is a unit of Sioux Falls, South Dakota based Media Demographics, Inc. In addition to Renter Nation, the company is engaged in several other internet and targeted marketing initiatives.
