Wawa Fills up for HIV/AIDS
Hazlet, NJ, June 04, 2012 --(PR.com)-- New York AIDS activist, Victor Mooney begins four day fundraising walk to Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem from a Wawa convenience store. Wawa has supplied Mr. Mooney with a gift card that he will used to purchase fresh food, water and energy bars along his route. The two-hundred mile walk will take Mr. Mooney thru parts of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Manhattan and ending with a march across the Brooklyn Bridge.
During breaks, the public will be invited to score a goal for an AIDS-free generation with a 2010 World Cup Match Ball, which has been donated by Federation International de Football Association (FIFA).
Funds raised from this event will go towards the purchase of one rowboat ($5,000) that Mr. Mooney will use in partnership with the XIX International AIDS Conference 2012 for a coastal row from New York City to Washington, D.C. in July. Mr. Mooney hopes the boat will be christened at the Philadelphia Marine Center. Afterwards, Mr. Mooney will train locally with this vessel for his fourth bid to cross the Atlantic Ocean later this year.
Mooney has lost one brother to AIDS and has another battling the disease. According to the CDC, about 1.2 million people in the U.S. have HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, and 20 percent of them are unaware they are infected. There are 53,000 new HIV infections diagnosed each year in the U.S., and 14 percent of these infections occur in 13 to 25 year-olds. "My mission is to encourage voluntary HIV testing and increase awareness of this preventable disease," said Mooney.
Trojan Brand Condoms, Days Inn, NY Waterway, Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem, Wawa and Historic Hotel Bethlehem are sponsors for Mooney’s – Walking with the Tide fundraiser. GC Media is coordinating the communication efforts for this special event.
