On Friday the 13th, January, 2012, Carol Hasbrouck was downsized at her place of employment. Having been in the mortgage business for the last 24 years, she knew it wasn’t the end of the world. Carol pursued another job with yet another bank doing what she’d done for her entire career. The problem was: it wasn’t fun anymore and the money was about ½ of what it used to be.
Then she read an article in Parade Magazine about a single dad and his two sons that are traveling the world doing service work. (Their website is (www.twelveintwelve.org) The thought came to her, “I could do something like that, only here in America.” It felt right when she thought about it and it started to unfold in a magical way. Her roommate and good friend, Joyce Claflin, agreed to be the 2nd Dame Gone Wild, Doing Good Work.
Their mission on this journey is to truly connect with people at a deeper level. They’ll do this in many ways: staying with host families - old friends and family; giving Free Hugs in the downtown area of cities; helping Habitat for Humanity, an exotic pet vet, brain injured adults; making peace bracelets for abused women; feeding the homeless, working in the Bernheim Forest, caring for animals and more.
They leave St. Petersburg, FL on June 20th, traveling through GA, NC, KY, IL, MN, WI, IA, MI, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, VT, ME, CT, NY, MA, D.C., NC, SC, GA and back home to FL in mid October. They will volunteer in 33 cities helping People, Pets and Planets.
Through vision, courage and imagination Joyce and Carol have taken an all too familiar situation in today’s world and transformed it into a blessing and inspiration for all.
