Singing the Psalms: Annual Delaware Valley Summer Institute July 8-11

Dr. Martin Tel, editor of newly-released “Psalms for All Seasons,” the most comprehensive English language Psalter ever produced, to lead annual series at Presbyterian churches in Stockton, Lambertville, Titusville and Mt. Airy, New Jersey.

Titusville, NJ, June 08, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Dr. Martin Tel, senior editor of the newly-released “Psalms for All Seasons: A Complete Psalter for Worship” and C.F. Seabrook Director of Music at Princeton Theological Seminary, will lead the series, “Psalms for All Seasons: An exploration of the Psalter as teacher of song and prayer,” July 8 through 11 at the third Delaware Valley Summer Institute hosted by the Presbyterian churches in Stockton, Lambertville, Titusville and Mt. Airy, New Jersey.

Participants in the four-night series will sing through many settings of the Psalms as they have been used by cultures around the world to pray, to celebrate, and to grieve. Among the selections will be Psalm settings from John Calvin’s “Genevan Psalter,” Scotland’s Iona Community, and African, African American and Asian churches and cultures.

“Martin Tel is a first-rate scholar and musician,” said the Rev. Merle Wilson, pastor of the Mt. Airy church and a former student of Tel’s. “Our four churches are honored to be able to host him for this series in which our congregations and neighbors will be able to hear many familiar texts reinterpreted through music.”

“The breadth of ‘Psalms for All Seasons’ is truly remarkable,” said the Rev. Will Shurley, pastor of the Titusville church and also a former student of Tel’s. “Dr. Tel collected settings of all 150 psalms, the largest collection of such in the English language. Those who are able to attend our series this year will have the opportunity to explore many of these settings accompanied by Dr. Tel’s bright and accessible commentary and will be able to see many old texts through new eyes.”

The July 8 presentation, hosted by the Stockton Presbyterian Church, will allow participants to learn about the Psalter in Christian worship by taking a look at its use and development from ancient through modern times. The July 9 presentation, hosted by the Lambertville Presbyterian Church, will take participants on a journey through the Psalms as they have been used in churches in many cultures. The July 10 presentation, hosted by the First Presbyterian Church of Titusville, will enable participants to learn how to pray and sing the psalms in solidarity with others whose life experiences may be foreign to their own. The July 11 presentation, hosted by the Mt. Airy Presbyterian Church, will explore the New Testament’s usage of the Psalms, particularly as they were used to give voice to Christ and the Church.

“Much of the Psalms’ wealth comes in their ability to give voice to the voiceless,” said the Rev. Ken Good, pastor of the Stockton church. “Whether one cannot find language to express joy, sorrow, doubt, or faith, one can always turn to the Psalms for help. We look forward to broadening our faith’s vocabulary through Dr. Tel and his music.”

The four Presbyterian churches have been sponsoring a summer education series since 2009. Previous speakers have included Dr. Jeremy Hutton, who presented a series on Old Testament prophets and prophecies, and Dr. C. Clifton Black, who led classes on Jesus’s parables as presented through each of the four canonical gospels.

“The historic collaboration among our four churches has enabled us to provide for our congregations and our communities something far deeper and richer than we could have done on our own,” said the Rev. Dr. Peter Gregory, pastor of the Lambertville church. “Church members and neighbors have forged friendships across municipal and county boundaries while at the same time being able to broaden not only their faith, but worldview. We are grateful Martin Tel will allow us to continue this summer tradition.”

The 2012 Delaware Valley Summer Institute is free and open to the public. All presentations will begin at 7 p.m. and will be followed by light refreshments. Copies of “Psalms for All Seasons: A Complete Psalter for Worship” will be available for $20 each evening or until supplies run out.
