Justus Cotterill Exhibit on Display at Erie Art Museum

Erie, PA, June 10, 2012 --(PR.com)-- The Erie Art Museum announces a new exhibit, Justus Cotterill: The Sway, on view June 1 through September 1, 2012 in the Ronald E. Holstein Gallery. The show centers on the artist’s depictions of young adulthood which, in his words are, “all about staying young for as long as you can.” His inspiration for this show stems from one’s journey into adulthood, from boyhood to manhood.

“Skateboards, surfboards and firecrackers symbolize a part of being a kid that is thrilling and reckless,” he says. “The chance of pain or injury takes these activities into a realm of self-awareness and denial. There is something about the rousing suspicion that you are about to be hurt that electrifies the senses and pushes you to go to greater extremes. How far can you take things?”

Cotterill’s skateboards and surfboards are far less threatening. His prints of skateboard decks mingle with miniature wooden skateboarding ramps. A near life-size surfboard hangs on the gallery wall, a woodcut on paper. Though it won’t catch any waves, one could imagine picking it up and taking a ride in the swaying surf. Interspersed are other images of firecrackers, bombs and other pieces of young adulthood.

The artist will be present at a public reception and “meet & greet” at the June 15 Gallery Night at EAM, from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m.

Justus Cotterill is a master of fine arts candidate in Printmaking at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Cleveland Institute of Art in photography and has taught photography in Erie and Cleveland. His works have been shown in Erie, Pittsburgh, New York City, Cleveland and Meadville, in group and solo shows; most recently participating in the 2012 group show “Recreation/Renewal/Rebirth” at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, the 2011 Erie Art Museum Spring Show and 2010’s “Sideshow by the Seashore,” a two-man show with Tom Ferraro at Ferraro Gallery in Erie.
