Taken over a period of two years at Southern California flea markets, Guimera’s still lifes are a new look at flea market finds.
The flea market is a place where objects of different eras, tastes, and prices, each with its own history, come together. A doll’s head with a red rose bow sits upon an antique silver platter and stares out with well-worn painted eyes. A black plaster dog squats on his haunches atop a picnic table as a cheerful clown sits by his paws, and political and movie posters loom in the background. Rusted tools from a bygone era lie perfectly arranged on a weather beaten table. Guimera’s clear, close-up photographs of oddly juxtaposed objects, unusual pieces, and poignant old favorites pair heartwarming memories with haunting images. His photographs offer a new take on the old saying “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure.”
