Carlos Fuente Jr. Honored by Dominican Foundation

New York, NY, June 15, 2012 --(PR.com)-- One hundred and forty friends, fans and “cigar family” members gathered at the Park Café on May 24 to honor Carlos Fuente Jr. as the Dominican Foundation’s Distinguished Humanitarian Award recipient. The award was presented at the Foundation’s Inaugural Gala hosted by the Dominican Foundation and sponsored by J.C. Newman Cigar Co. and the New York Yankees.

“Carlos has been instrumental in raising over $10 million in the past few years to fund the Cigar Family Community Project in Bonao, Dominican Republic. A project that includes an award winning school, medical center, community center and recreation complex serving the 5,000 families in the Bonao area. His vision for the project and tireless efforts to promote it have taken a dream and turned it into a reality,” said Paul Schenkel, President of the Dominican Foundation’s Board of Directors.

The event included an awards dinner and post dinner VIP celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Arturo Fuente Cigar Co. Addressing Carlos and guests were Paul Schenkel, John Gagain Jr., Senior Advisor of the UN Global Compact Initiative, Eric Newman, President J.C. Newman Cigar Co., and David Luther, Executive Director of IDDI (non-profit partner of the Dominican Foundation in the Dominican Republic).

$60,000 was raised and will go towards the Foundation’s “First Five To Survive” program which focuses on helping children in the Dominican Republic survive the critical first five years of life by providing access to primary healthcare services. In addition to the contributions by the event’s sponsors a significant donation was made by Marvin Shanken, publisher of Cigar Aficionado magazine.

Created in 1991, the Dominican Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization based in New York, NY whose mission is to promote awareness about the issues facing Dominicans due to poverty while working to provide the next generation with the basic skills, resources and opportunities for a better life. The Foundation is managed by an all volunteer Board of Directors.

Founded in 1984, El Instituto Dominicano de Desarrollo Integral (IDDI) was created due to respond to the tremendous poverty that exists in the Dominican Republic as a result of corruption, overpopulation, job scarcity, the increased gap between the rich and the poor, and the rise in the national debt. Today, IDDI is the leading sustainable non-governmental organization recognized by the United Nations, USAID, World Bank, InterAmerican Development Bank, among many others. For nearly 30 years, IDDI has had a profound effect on the health, education, prevention of HIV-AIDs, clean water and sanitation, and the development of housing and microenterprise initiatives for millions of Dominicans.
