Bayer CropScience Cultivates Patriotism by Donating Historic Flag Collection to North Carolina State Capitol

Research Triangle Park, NC, June 17, 2012 --(PR.com)-- The broad stripes and bright stars of 9 historic star-spangled banners have found a permanent home at the North Carolina State Capitol thanks to Bayer CropScience. On Flag Day, June 14, the crop science company handed over its collection in an unveiling ceremony on capitol grounds.

The flags, representing a dynamic period in American history ranging from 1776 to 1814, were collected by Bayer CropScience in the early 1990’s as a way of connecting with the greater Triangle community. Throughout the years, the flags have taken part in patriotic celebrations including parades, Boy Scouts of America ceremonies, National Guard Armory events and more.

Flags in the collection include a 1776 Grand Union flag, the first flag of the United States, a 1776 Gadsden flag with the iconic rattlesnake and declaration of “Don’t Tread On Me,” a 1777 “stars and stripes” flag, and an 1814 flag, the original of which inspired Francis Scott Key to pen the poem that would later become the U.S. national anthem.

“We are honored that our beautiful collection of flags will now be permanently available at the State Capitol and to the citizens of North Carolina,” said Dr. Jack Boyne, director of communications for Bayer CropScience. “Our company is committed to cultivating pride through public service, and with this donation we hope to inspire others to learn more about Flag Day and other important events in our nation’s history.”

Bayer CropScience previously donated the flags each year for temporary display at the State Capitol from Flag Day on June 14 to Independence Day on July 4. The collection now permanently resides in the capitol and will be carefully displayed for future public education and enjoyment.
