Yorktown University Offers Free Online Lecture "Why Study the History of Art?"
Oshkosh, WI, June 20, 2012 --(PR.com)-- A free online lecture on “Why Study the History of Art?” is being offered as a public service by Yorktown University, a Denver, Colorado-based accredited Internet university rooted in the philosophy of limited government of the Founding Fathers, the Judaeo-Christian tradition and philosophic truths that shaped our enduring Constitution.

The free lecture is given by Arthur Pontynen, who holds a Ph.D. in art history from the University of Iowa and has been awarded Smithsonian, Heritage Foundation and National Endowment for the Humanities fellowships. His many publications and reviews are found in a variety of publications, including the Art Bulletin, Oriental Art, Bulletin of the Field Museum, ACE: Art and Christian Enquiry, and “American Outlook Magazine.”

In this lecture, Dr. Pontynen establishes the groundwork for the appreciation of Christian, Classicism, Renaissance and Baroque art, while demonstrating the deficiencies of modernist and postmodernist movements in art history. Dr. Pontynen argues that the study of the history of art is rooted in the pursuit of truth, goodness and beauty, and that the study of art history should bring us to a greater understanding of reality. Through art, Dr. Pontynen argues, we affirm the foundations of Western culture and civilization and asserts that such a quest is a cosmopolitan solution to the cultural and spiritual diseases of relativism and nihilism.

“Culture is the way we have aspired to get in touch with meaningful reality and escape the trivial or the violent,” says Dr. Pontynen, who also has taught at the University of Iowa, Lewis and Clark College and Stephen F. Austin University.

Arthur Pontynen is one of 37 members of Yorktown University’s founding faculty who come from disciplines in mathematics, history, philosophy, government, constitutional law, art history, architecture, religious studies, classics, biology, accounting, marketing and other disciplines that contribute to the curriculum in 12 degree and certificate programs.

Yorktown University is an accredited university that is focused on academic disciplines in politics, American history, constitutional law, economics and culture. The university is a member of the Association of Christian Schools International and offers its degree programs solely via the Internet.
