Mwalim, a.k.a. DaPhunkeeProfessor is a multidisciplinary, master artist and teacher. Playing Carnegie Hall before he turned 14, Mwalim began his career in the 1980's, while attending Music & Art High School. Hanging out in the fabled 251 West 3oth Street music building led to doing session work at Planet Studios and Rogue studios; later doing session work at Jazzy Jay Recording Studios when it was located in the Bronx. The Bronx native recently released his fourth studio album, “DEEP Soul Chants & Hollers” on Tuesday, June 12th following the release of the critically acclaimed single, “The ABYSS”, which according to Michael Fossati of Spiritofhouse.com, “… its unique and fresh fusion of the classic house/garage sound made famous by people such as the legendary Larry Levan and the signature soul-funk-jazz stylings of Mwalim DaPhunkeeProfessor, this is something truly special not to be missed. And best of all, the release features none less than seven fantastic versions covering different genres, making it appeal to difference audience.” (March 25, 2012). Based on the strength of this single, Mwalim won the 2012 'Best Male Jazz Artist' category at the New England Urban Music Awards, also having earned one in 2010 for the album “The Liberation Sessions” and the single “Dem Big Girls”.
