Two North Texas Homeschool Seniors Receive Scholarships from NTHEN
Homeschool students honored with $500 scholarships from the North Texas Home Educators' Network (NTHEN) and Learning for Life.
Rockwall, TX, June 29, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Two north Texas college-bound homeschoolers have been awarded North Texas Home Educators’ Network (NTHEN) 2012 Scholarships. Each received $500.
Joshua Mott of McKinney, son of Sterling and Cindy Mott, will be attending the University of Texas at Dallas, where he will pursue a degree in computer science.
Kaylee Elise DeMetrotion, daughter of Paul and Jaree DeMetrotion, will pursue a degree in dance performance at Sam Houston State University.
Joshua and Kaylee received their scholarships during a ceremony in their honor June 21 at the National Headquarters of the Boy Scouts of America in Irving, Texas. Representatives of both NTHEN and Learning for Life participated in the ceremony, followed by a tour of the Boy Scouts of America Museum and lunch.
Joshua Mott has been homeschooled since kindergarten and has a long list of academic accomplishments, including a 4.0 GPA. He was also a member of the McKinney Area Christian Home School Honor Society and scored at the 91st percentile on the ACT test. Throughout his high school years, he was actively involved in community service projects, putting in more than 570 hours of service to organizations such as Heritage Farmstead Museum, Boy Scouts of America, Congressional Youth Advisory Council, Generation Joshua, and various community projects through his church, Grace Bible Fellowship Church.
As an Eagle Scout, Joshua served in a number of leadership positions, including Assistant Senior Patrol Leader and Troop Quartermaster. He was selected to participate in Sam Johnson’s Congressional Youth Advisory Council for two consecutive years and was a member of the Museum Apprenticeship Program for the Heritage Farmstead Museum.
Homeschooled since second grade, Kaylee DeMetrotion earned a 3.9 GPA and scored at the 64th percentile on the ACT test.
Kaylee’s extracurricular activities include dance, where she was a member of the Elite dance team at Dance Movement. She has competed in both solo and group performances in jazz, ballet, tap, modern and lyrical dance. Besides dance, she started and led a group Bible study for her fellow dance team members, and is active in the Deaf Ministry at Cottonwood Creek Baptist Church.
“Joshua and Kaylee’s educational accomplishments and community service activities are reflective of so many homeschool students,” said Stephen Lunsford, president of NTHEN. “These two were chosen for the 2012 scholarship based on their academic record, personal accomplishments, leadership capabilities, character, and willingness to serve others.”
The NTHEN Scholarship fund was established in conjunction with NTHEN's corporate partner, Learning for Life®.
