Novel Explores Social-Emotional Toll Healthcare Reform Takes on Doctors
Chicago, IL, July 01, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Windy City Publishers is proud to announce the release of Morton’s Fork, a new novel by Dale Coy, M.D. As healthcare reform is the social issue of the decade, Dr. Coy brings to light the true life of a doctor, showing the complexities of practicing medicine, while providing an inside look at the social-emotional toll healthcare reform is taking on our nation’s physicians.
A “Morton’s Fork Dilemma” is a choice between two equally unpleasant alternatives. When an uninsured patient slaps Dr. Hartley – an old school doctor – with a frivolous lawsuit, his world begins to unravel. At the mercy of an unjust legal system, he reaches his breaking point, and on the brink of despair, commits a rash act that thrusts him into the center of the hot-button social-political issue. As chaos ensues, the original malpractice lawsuit becomes the least of his worries. The worlds of politics, law, and medicine collide.
This year’s presidential debates will focus on the Supreme Court’s recent decision and the overhaul of healthcare, a topic touching every American. Morton’s Fork portrays how business principles have taken priority in patient care, making the Hippocratic oath a useless relic. Patient respect has eroded. Medicare cuts have produced financial uncertainty. A greedy malpractice legal system has demanded perfection and made doctors fearful and bitter. Dr. Coy gives a disturbing look at modern medicine in this story of a doctor in a personal struggle between his own ethical convictions and today’s brutal economic conditions.
Morton’s Fork combines elements of both legal and medical thrillers. Morton’s Fork is not just entertaining, but also an evenly-balanced look at a serious social issue, and shows it from a humane perspective.
