4 Men, 4 Bikes, for Charity

Broome, WA, Australia, July 05, 2012 --(PR.com)-- After riding 2,000 kilometres from Darwin, four intrepid cyclists are making a pit stop in Broome and meeting with Shire President, Cr Graeme Campbell.

The team of riders set off from Darwin at the start of June to cycle 18,000 kilometres around the Australian mainland, without any motorised assistance. Their goal: an amazing cycling tour to raise awareness of climate change and environmental issues and raise funds for environmental charity Greenfleet, whose mission is to create a low carbon future for Australia.

From bitumen to dirt, road trains and river crossings, the adventure has already proven to be intense for international cyclists: Nick Scaife, Tommy Gurr, Jimmy McGee and Markus Schorn.

Speaking for the group, Nick said, “It’s been an amazing ride so far! We‘ve been touched by the fantastic support we’ve received from people we’ve met along the way.”

The four adventurers are undertaking this epic trip, the longest any of them have ever contemplated, to raise enough funds to plant 8,000 native trees in Australia with Greenfleet.

“This adventure is driven by our passion for cycling and our will to make a positive difference for the environment. We’re very thankful to the people and organisations who have made a donation towards the charity Greenfleet to help plant native trees in Australia,” added Nick.

Thanks to the support of generous donors in Australia and overseas, the LIFE team have already raised enough funds to plant more than 870 native trees, which is more than 10% of the way to their ultimate target.

Shire President, Cr Graeme Campbell will meet with the cyclists tomorrow to farewell them on their way out of Broome, wishing them well for the remainder of their trip.

“The Shire of Broome is really happy to be able to support the four riders and the cause they’re highlighting, and we wish them well for the rest of their journey,” Cr Campbell said.

“Climate change is an issue the Shire takes very seriously and we’re introducing a host of initiatives to reduce our carbon footprint including developing a new state-of-the-art waste management facility, auditing our domestic and recycling waste to find ways of reducing the amount going into landfill, and installing solar panels on the roof of the new Broome Multipurpose Arts and Community Venue to power the Shire administration building and library.”
