And if Elected: a Musical Tribute to Our Election Process with the Minnesota Sinfonia
Minneapolis, MN, September 26, 2012 --(PR.com)-- The Minnesota Sinfonia will open its 2012/13 Winter Concert season this October featuring a timely performance of And if Elected, a compilation of old time presidential campaign songs, to be sung in Barbershop chorus style. Joining the Sinfonia for these performances at First Covenant Church in East St Paul on Oct 26, and the Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis on Oct 27, are Minnesota’s own super star soprano, Maria Jette, appearing as Miss America, Bruce Humphrys as the Eternal Presidential Candidate, and Apollo, one of the oldest continuously performing male choruses in the United States.
And if Elected was composed for Jay Fishman and the old Minneapolis Chamber Symphony (predecessor of the Minnesota Sinfonia) by Sam Dennison. It serves to point out that even as time progresses, nothing ever really changes. These songs, taken from the mid 1800’s, provide a vivid reminder that the themes of the presidential campaign songs are ever present, and seem to be part of our ongoing political antics. Also on the program will be Jay Fishman's song cycle of old American songs, Careless Love, sung by Miss Jette, and Franz Joseph Haydn's Symphony Number 88.
Over the past ten years Maria has performed with the Sinfonia several times including their latest collaboration this past June and earlier in September when she toured with the Sinfonia to nine greater Minnesota communities. The Minnesota Sinfonia now to feature her yet again for the opening of their winter season. Ms. Jette has appeared with The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, the Minnesota Sinfonia, Houston, Kansas City, San Luis Obispo, Santa Rosa, Charlotte, Buffalo, Grand Rapids, Austin and San Antonio Symphonies, New York Chamber Symphony and Portland Baroque Orchestra, and for many merry seasons with Ex Machina Antique Music Theatre in the Twin Cities. With conductor Helmuth Rilling, she’s sung Bach, Mozart and Haydn around the US, Germany, Spain, Venezuela, Japan and Canada. She’s performed her own production of Seuss/Kapilow’s Green Eggs & Ham for over 40,000 kids in the USA. She has been a regular guest over many seasons at the San Luis Obispo Mozart and Oregon Bach Festivals and the Oregon Festival of American Music and is often heard nationally on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion.
