U.S. News' 2012 Best Hospitals: Sarasota Memorial Hospital Ranks Among Nation's 50 Best Hospitals for GYN & Florida's Top 10 for Overall Quality and Care
Sarasota, FL, July 19, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Sarasota Memorial Hospital is the only hospital in southwest Florida to make U.S. News & World Report's 2012 "Best Hospitals" list, ranking #47 for excellence in gynecological care. It also ranked #1 again for overall care in the Sarasota-Venice-North Port region, and this year earned a spot on Florida's top 10 hospitals list.
The region's only public health system, Sarasota Memorial was among just 3 percent of the nation's hospitals to earn its spot on the list of 50 Best Hospitals. In U.S. News' 2012 Best Hospitals study, fewer than 150 of roughly 5,000 U.S. hospitals evaluated earned a national ranking in at least one of 16 medical specialties. As it did last year, U.S. News expanded its list to recognize nearly 550 additional "high performing" hospitals in major metropolitan areas, giving consumers a new way to compare hospitals in their region that perform nearly as well in at least one rated specialty as their nationally ranked counterparts, according to U.S. News Health Rankings Editor Avery Comarow.
The annual guide is designed to help steer patients to hospitals with strong skills in the procedures and medical conditions that present the biggest challenges, Comarow said, adding: "All of these hospitals are the kinds of medical centers that should be on your list when you need the best care. They are where other hospitals send the toughest cases."
This year, U.S. News modified its methodology, taking some of the juice out of high reputational scores and giving community hospitals like Sarasota Memorial with solid clinical data more opportunity to show patients how well they perform. Reputation still counts as 32.5 percent of a hospital's overall score, but the modification had the effect of shrinking the range of reputational scores, thereby reducing the distance between hospitals.
In addition to its national ranking in Gynecology, Sarasota Memorial ranked #1 in the Bradenton-Sarasota-North Port metro area for overall quality and care, #8 in Florida, and among the top quartile nationally for achieving "high performing" hospital rankings in the following specialties:

• Geriatrics
• Neurology & Neurosurgery
• Pulmonology
