Casa Grande, AZ, July 25, 2012 --(PR.com)-- State’s Best Slam Poets Verb It Out for State Title
It's been some time since Arizona had a bonafide poetry shoot out for the top team of slamming poets, and now the wait is over as Arizona celebrates the inaugural Copper State Poetry Slam Championships. The event is scheduled for July 27th and 28th, 2012.
Teams Representing Arizona Nationally for Poetry
At the Core of the two day event are the four teams that will be representing Arizona at the Poetry Slam National Championships in August (to be held in Charlotte, North Carolina). Teams from Sedona, Flagstaff, Phoenix and Tucson will make their trek August 7th-11th for the chance to win the National Championships. Copper State is a fundraiser for those teams, with a portion of ticket sales going to each team.
A Tremendous Diversity of Side Events
Competing against each other, as well as four additional teams of poets from around the state only heightens the excitement, and ensures that patrons will never have to worry about a dull moment.
In addition, the event features a special "Legends of Arizona Poetry Slam" event on Saturday, with poets Dan Seaman, Bill Campana, Sarge Lintecum, Patrick Hare, Jewel Blackfeather and David Tabor all sharing the stage for an incredible homage to the history of poetry slam in AZ.
The main competition, as well as additional events such as the Arizona Poetry Slam Legends Showcase, Youth Showcase, and other events are being held at Casa Grande’s own Black Box Theater, located at 1330 E Florence Blvd., Casa Grande, AZ 85122.

About Poetry Slam
Simply put, poetry slam is the competitive art of performance poetry. It puts a dual emphasis on writing and performance, encouraging poets to focus on what they're saying and how they're saying it. In 1984, construction worker and poet Marc Smith started a poetry reading at a Chicago jazz club, the Get Me High lounge, looking for a way to breathe life into the open mike format. The series, and its emphasis on performance, laid the groundwork for the brand of poetry that would eventually be exhibited in slam.
