Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee Boast a "Triple Play" Game Plan for the Mind, Body and Soul

Teaching youth the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle, Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee continues to empower its young people to make "healthy a habit."

Nashville, TN, August 02, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Launched in 2005 by Boys & Girls Clubs of America, in partnership with Coca-Cola and the Wellpoint Foundation, "Triple Play: A Game Plan for the Mind, Body & Soul" was designed to help improve the overall health of Club Members ages 6-18. Dubbed “Triple Play” in reference to its three-pronged strategy of targeting multiple aspects of the Club and its members, this healthy lifestyles program strives to help promote overall wellness, a sense of belonging, boost confidence and engage youth's mind, body and soul.

Mind: Healthy Habits

Empowering youth to eat properly is just one of the generation-changing, life-enhancing goals of this program. With the help of Triple Play’s nutrition component, Healthy Habits, the power of choice, portion size, and setting personal goals is given to the Club Member.

Body:

While encouraging young people to partake in non-competitive daily fitness challenges and allowing youth to challenge their own limits in physical activity, Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee’s five locations may also arrange inter-Club competitions. These competitions allow Club Members to compete against others in team sports and games. Additionally, “Triple Play” Club Teens are engaged in Club and community service efforts to promote health and physical activity. Taking a systematic approach this component boosts Clubs’ traditional physical activities to a higher level by providing sports and fitness activities for all youth. In addition, six daily fitness challenges give youth at every age the chance to play longer and harder at different games – from jumping rope to basketball and creating games of their own.

Soul:

In helping to promote feelings of belonging, usefulness and competence, “Triple Play” teaches Club professionals how to design a program that encourages youth's personal growth and development. These social recreation activities typically take place in the Club's Gamesroom which is considered by many to be the hub of the Club. Members strengthen their character, increase confidence, and enhance their ability to relate well to others through a well-run Gamesroom experience.

"We are excited about the "Triple Play" program and have felt strongly about implementing its healthy lifestyles 'curriculum' in our Clubs," said Dan Jernigan, President/CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee. "Now more than ever, as our children and teens continue to face an incredible obesity epidemic, it is crucial that we provide our Club Members and their families with the tools and resources necessary to lead active, healthy lifestyles. We are committed to our youth and their overall well-being," continued Jernigan.
