A Civil War Story
There’s Danger, Intrigue, and Romance in The Breastplate, a Novel by Shirley McCracken
Lenoir City, TN, August 18, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Outskirts Press announces the release of The Breastplate, a new novel by author Shirley McCracken. It’s the story of the lives and families torn apart by the Civil War, and the courage of one woman as she struggles to keep her family intact in these turbulent times.
When Kitty Claiborne—the beautiful, pampered daughter of a wealthy senator—falls in love with and marries Lt. William Benson, attaché to President Lincoln, she has no idea her life will change so dramatically. Thrust into the hardships of life in a remote cabin, she is left alone for weeks at a time while her husband is given a mysterious assignment in East Tennessee. William and his men have a mission: to track Confederate troop movement and create diversions to slow them down until the Union officers in the area can be advised of their plans. They learn how to slip through the forest silently, and it is this silent stealth, as they hamper the enemy troops, that earns them the name “Phantom Warriors.”
And the female protagonist is also a warrior in her own right. Kitty is no spoiled, delicate flower—she loves to hunt and fish and ride, and she embraces her new life with courage and optimism. When William is carried home, badly wounded, by a group of strangers, Kitty springs into action. There’s a price on their heads, and she must try to smuggle them all through enemy checkpoints to safety.
The Breastplate is a richly detailed, well-researched book that examines the lives affected by the Civil War. It is also a celebration of courage and the determination and strength that come with love. This book can be ordered by retailers or wholesalers for the maximum trade discount price set by the author in quantities of ten or more from the Outskirts Press Direct bookstore at www.OutskirtsPress.com/bookstore. About the Author: Author Shirley McCracken is a freelance writer and poet who has long held an interest in the Civil War. When her husband found a relic from the war on their farm—a Union breastplate that had lain undisturbed for years—she was intrigued, and when the war’s 150th anniversary approached, she decided to write its story. She is a registered nurse, a wife, mother of two sons, and grandmother of two young grandsons who call her “Purple.” She enjoys the outdoor life—hiking, rafting, swimming, scuba-diving, cross-country skiing, and even dog sledding. A horsewoman since her youth, she has ridden many miles on her Tennessee walking horses, Jazz and Jubilee.
