Hemel Hempstead, United Kingdom, August 24, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Waste King, the specialist collections, clearance and recycling company, has recently expanded its corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy by pledging to give 30 per cent of its business turnover in one day to Medical Detection Dogs. This pledge is in addition to its continuing practical and monetary support for other charities.
Waste King’s managing director, Glenn Currie, visited Medical Detection Dogs’ Milton Keynes headquarters recently to hand over the company’s cheque – for several hundred pounds.
Medical Detection Dogs is a charity that works with researchers, NHS Trusts and Universities. Its work has attracted Lesley Nicol – otherwise known as ‘Mrs Patmore’, in the ITV drama series, Downton Abbey – to become an ambassador for the charity.
“Like Downton Abbey’s Mrs Patmore, Waste King believes that Medical Detection Dogs is a worthwhile charity,” Glenn Currie said.
“We believe that the charity is not only doing valuable practical work in helping people with existing conditions to keep those conditions from being life threatening but it’s also involved in important research work. This research could result in saving the NHS a great deal of time and money because of the early detection of medical conditions.
“We’ve wanted to do something to help Medical Detection Dogs for some time – and we’re pleased that we’ve now found a practical and effective way to do so,” he added.
Medical Detection Dogs trains dogs to help people with life threatening health conditions, giving these people greater independence and a higher quality of life. Its dogs are now working with Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust as well as with Bristol University to establish exactly what it is that the dogs are detecting.
The dogs are taught to identify the odour changes that are associated with certain medical events. They alert their ‘owners’; bring any necessary medical supplies such as glucose and blood testing kits, and get help if necessary.
About Medical Detection Dogs (www.medicaldetectiondogs.org.uk)
Medical Detection Dogs is a charity that works with researchers, NHS Trusts and Universities. Its Medical Alert Dogs are taught to identify the odour changes that are associated with certain medical events. This includes:
· Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) – notably for people living with diabetes.
· Addisonian crisis which causes severe pain, convulsions and unconsciousness.
· Narcolepsy, a malfunction of the sleep/wake regulating system which causes sleep attacks and paralysis.
The charity is continuing to investigate other debilitating and potentially fatal conditions where its dogs may be able to help. These include severe allergic responses and migraines.
This work originated because Dr John Church became interested in using sniffer dogs to detect cancer after he read a letter in an edition of The Lancet in 1989. In 2003 Dr Church brought together a team of doctors, dog trainers and scientists – and, the following year, published a preliminary proof of principle study, following the world’s first clinically robust trial to be completed.
"Cancer and Bio-detection Dogs" was formed in October 2007 and obtained charitable status in June 2008.
