Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and the Holidays

A podcast helps those with ADD/ADHD cope with the stress of the holidays.

Seattle, WA, November 27, 2005 --(PR.com)-- All the holiday activities of baking, cooking, decorating, gift shopping, gift wrapping, entertaining and Christmas card sending can be overwhelming, especially for those with the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD).

ADHD is a neurological condition caused by a lack of neurotransmitters in the brain which makes it more difficult to plan, organize and follow through on activities. About four percent of the adult population has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

"Every year, my sister mails her Christmas photo cards by the day after Thanksgiving. I really admire her ability to plan ahead and stay on task. But with my ADD, it's really hard," confesses Abby, the host and producer of "ADDitude ADDjustment" an ADD/ADHD Podcast.

A podcast is a web blog (blog) that you can hear. It contains episodes of audio content collected together in a show. Anyone can click on the link and the computer's media player will play the sound file (mp3). Or people can listen from anywhere when they download the sound files onto a portable mp3 player like an iPod. Hence the name, podcast.

This week's and next week's podcast episodes are devoted to helping ADHDers get organized for the holidays.

Here are some suggestions to get started right now for a smooth, stress-free holiday.
- Create a holiday notebook to keep all holiday-related papers together.
- Fill in a calendar that lists all the family events and parties.
- Prepare a total budget for the holiday season, and stick to it.
- Create a list of all the gifts you will buy or make.
- Split up this gift list into 5 smaller chunks and buy one-fifth of the gifts each week.
- Keep all the gift receipts in an envelope in the notebook.
- Make a Christmas card address list. Put the list on the computer to make it easier for this year and next year. Write and address a small group off the list each week.
- Do a family wardrobe check in advance; and clean, repair or buy any needed clothing items.
- Test your home's carbon monoxide and smoke detectors.

"Be sure to give yourself a break," reminds Abby. "Talk to your friends and family about what you can do without. Maybe you decide to spend less on gifts, or you entertain more simply. These compromises help everyone focus on making Christmas a joyous fun occasion with the people we love."

Abby adds, "And when you're feeling stressed out, just remember that Christmas song: "Have yourself a merry LITTLE Christmas. Let your heart be light."
