Old Chatham Golf Club Receives Certification in Environmental Planning
Triangle-Based Golf Club Joins Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System (ACSS) Golf Course Program
Durham, NC, September 01, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Old Chatham Golf Club (http://www.oldchathamgolf.org), a Triangle-based golf club, has announced that the club has received certification in Environmental Planning from the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System (ACSS), an international program administered by Audubon International designed to help landowners preserve and enhance the environmental quality of their property.
The ACSS provides an advisory service to help existing golf courses develop effective conservation and wildlife enhancement programs. The worldwide effort is coordinated by Audubon International and is sponsored in part by the United States Golf Association.
By joining and participating in the ACSS, Old Chatham Golf Club will be involved in projects that enhance habitat for wildlife and preserve natural resources for the benefit of the local community. These projects may include placing nesting boxes for cavity-nesting birds such as bluebirds and swallows, utilizing integrated pest management techniques, conserving water, and maintaining food and cover for wildlife.
After the environmental plan is approved, properties in the program may apply for certification in Wildlife and Habitat Management, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, Water Conservation, Water Quality Management, and Outreach and Education by demonstrating that they have met minimum requirements for each category.
In addition to golf courses, the ACSS has programs designed for businesses, cemeteries, schools and individual homeowners. For more information, contact Audubon International at (518)-767-9051 or visit http://www.audubon.org.
Quotes:
“The open space of a golf course is utilized not only by golfers, but is the habitat for a variety of wildlife species,” said Joellen Lampman, Audubon International program director. “We welcome Old Chatham Golf Club’s commitment to the environment and to managing the golf course with wildlife in mind.”
"It is an honor to be part of such a prestigious group and to be involved with such an important issue as our environment,” said John Marino, Old Chatham’s director of operations. “The land our golf course was built on was specifically chosen by the founding members for its natural beauty. We know that everything we do here impacts our surrounding land and wildlife, so we care for it with great respect."
"We choose the most environmentally friendly practices for maintaining the beautifully diverse ecosystem of Old Chatham,” said Brian Powell, Old Chatham’s golf course superintendent. “We are proud of our ability to do so, while maintaining the highest standards of play on the golf course."
