The National Atheist Party Congratulates Kyrsten Sinema (D) for Winning the Arizona Congressional Primary
The National Atheist Party congratulates AZ State Senator Sinema on her victory, and supports her in her campaign for Congress.
Florence, KY, September 03, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Kyrsten Sinema, an openly bisexual Arizona State Senator, has won the Democratic primary for Arizona’s 9th Congressional District. She defeated her two other nominees -- State Senator David Schapira and Andrei Cherny -- to face off against Republican nominee Vernon Parker this November. Simena had gone into the primary race with poll numbers at just over 42%.
“The National Atheist Party has congratulated Ms. Sinema on her victory, and supports her in her campaign for Congress,” stated Troy Boyle, President of the National Atheist Party (NAP), said. “Her fights in the Arizona State Senate have frequently aligned with the NAP’s platform.”
If Sinema wins her District’s U.S. House of Representative seat this fall, she will become the first openly bisexual member of the United States congress. She would be representing parts of Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, Paradise Valley, and the Ahwatukee Foothills. In a state that produced presidential candidate John McCain and the immigration policies of Governor Jan Brewer, Krysten Sinema has long been a lone voice of reason in her state.
Concerning Arizona’s immigration stance, which critics have frequently described as being overbearing, Sinema sponsored HCR2029 urging the adoption of the DREAM Act. In 2006, Sinema co-chaired a statewide campaign to defeat a proposition on that year’s ballot designed to ban the recognition of same-sex marriages and civil unions, and in 2008 fought against a redesigned version of the same proposition. Sinema has also fought to uphold the constitutional principle of the separation of church and state, and has insisted on reasoned and evidence-based legislating on issues related to the environment and science. These efforts led the Center of Inquiry to recognize her with their award for The Advancement of Science and Reason in Public Policy.
“The NAP is proud to support Kyrsten Sinema’s run for Congress, and we commend her for her insistence on reason and evidence when deciding policy issues,” continued Boyle. “Rights are designed to protect minority positions for the unfair oppression of their members by the majority, and the NAP feels that the time is overdue for the recognition of the GLBT community as citizens, with rights protecting them from being targeted by those who disagree with their sexual identity. Also, the current system of immigration policies is deeply flawed, and Ms. Sinema realizes that. We are proud of Kyrsten Sinema, and look forward to watching her take her seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.”
