University Professor Releases Book About His Early Life in Fascist Romania
New York, NY, September 07, 2012 --(PR.com)-- University professor, chairman of pathology in NY, recalls early life in Romania under fascist and communist dictatorships.
In his memoir “Looking Back: From the Times of the Nazis and the Soviets to the World of Today,” Dr. Harry L. Ioachim describes the events of World War II and the Cold War and shares insight into the world of medicine and pathology.
In the course of his life, 85-year-old Harry L. Ioachim has witnessed major historical events and numerous changes in society and in his medical profession. In his memoir, he takes the reader on a journey through important moments in his life and in history. He believes that his book will appeal to the general public, particularly Jewish, interested in the historical events of the past century as well as to medical doctors, especially pathologists and cancer researchers.
Ioachim takes readers to Bucharest where he grew up in the pre-war years, followed by the fascist dictatorship allied with Nazi Germany in the invasion of Russia and by the Soviet occupation that imposed the establishment of the Communist state. During those years he graduated from medical school, specialized in pathology and became assistant professor at the University of Bucharest. In time he realized that the communist regime was a cruel dictatorship based on a doctrine of falsehoods and on the feared Securitate, the secret service of Communist Romania. In 1961 he managed to leave Romania with his wife and 1-year-old daughter, and after a time in Paris he immigrated to the U.S.
In New York, Dr. Ioachim advanced to the position of professor at the universities of Columbia, Cornell and New York University and to chairman of Pathology at Lenox Hill Hospital. He published numerous scientific papers on Cancer Immunology, Lymphomas and AIDS .In his book he describes the research and progress achieved in these medical fields. The memoir covers not only the events in Ioachim’s life but is also interlaced with historical episodes of Romania, a country not familiar to most Americans, says Ioachim, and of its Jewish population which was decimated during World War II.
