LitWorld’s Stand Up for Girls Campaign
Advocating for Every Girl’s Right to a Quality Education in Honor of the Annual United Nations International Day of the Girl, October 11.
New York, NY, September 21, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Ongoing through October 11, 2012: LitWorld, a global literacy nonprofit organization based in New York, presents Stand Up for Girls, an international campaign advocating for every girl’s right to a quality education. Celebrated in honor of the United Nations International Day of the Girl, Stand Up for Girls is rallying individuals from around the world in a global movement, standing together to champion the right of all girls to be Fierce, Fearless and Free.
LitWorld believes that literacy is a fundamental human right. According to Pam Allyn, Executive Director of LitWorld, “Reading rights are rights that belong to all people. Literacy opens up worlds of information, of inspiration, of hope, of laughter, of deep understanding. All girls must be able to vote with their names, read their medicine bottles, farm their land, ride a subway and go to college so that they can protect themselves against poverty, poor health outcomes and lifelong struggle.”
At least 793 million people around the world cannot read and write, and two thirds of them are women. In the United States alone an estimated 32 million adults are illiterate and approximately 32 percent of young adults do not graduate from high school. The implications are grave.
Stand Up for Girls began in 2011 as a social media campaign and a series of in-person events and calls to action as part of the movement to create an official International Day of the Girl. This day reached thousands of participants with organized rallies around the world, and as a result of campaigning by organizations including LitWorld, the United Nations officially sanctioned October 11 as the annual International Day of the Girl.
This year, LitWorld is leading a full scale Stand Up for Girls worldwide campaign. The LitWorld team is rallying their international network of literacy activists and participants to advocate for every girl’s right to a quality education. The campaign will culminate on October 11, 2012 with Stand Up for Girls events and online rallies, including a signature event at Riverside Church in New York City.
LitWorld encourages participants to use social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Ustream, Skype, and blogs to show support and spread the word, linking their posts to LitWorld’s social media accounts and website, and invites everyone to consider the question: What Do I Stand Up for?
