SABIC is First Multinational Corporation to be Honored with China RoHS Certification for Sustainable Electronics Materials
At a ceremony held in Shenzhen, China on July 25th, SABIC was officially recognized for Voluntary Pollution Control Certification for Electronic Information Products
Pittsfield, MA, September 28, 2012 --(PR.com)-- At a ceremony held in Shenzhen, China on July 25th, SABIC was officially recognized for Voluntary Pollution Control Certification for Electronic Information Products – an important China Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) certification – marking the first time a multinational corporation has ever been recognized for this achievement. Jointly presented by the Certification and Accreditation Administration of China (CAAC), the China Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), and the China Electronic Standardization Institute (CESI), the certification aims to control and reduce environmental pollution caused by the waste of electronic information products. SABIC’s voluntary participation in the process not only showcases the company’s environmental commitment in China, but also underscores how the company is proactively meeting global customer demand for world-class, environmentally responsible materials.
“SABIC is truly honored to receive this certification and proud to be the first multinational corporation to do so,” said Alan Leung, vice president, Asia Pacific for SABIC’s Innovative Plastics business. “Our commitment to our customers in the region and the world to help them meet their toughest environmental challenges is unyielding.”
Voluntary Pollution Control Certification for Electronic Information Products recognizes that SABIC’s materials used to manufacture consumer electronics do not contain hazardous substances. These include cadmium, lead, hexavalent chromium, mercury, polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), as well as compounds and formulations based on these substances. Plastics and other materials that are China RoHS certified are more likely to be included on the Chinese government’s procurement list than those that are not.
The CAAC and MIIT worked together to publish the Implementation Rules for Voluntary Certification on Control of Pollution from Electronic Information Products in November 2011. The implementation of this important China RoHS certification is to help promote healthy and sustainable practices at the materials’ source to protect the environment and the health of electronics consumers in China.
The SABIC project team that helped achieve RoHS certification included members of the company’s Product Stewardship and Quality Assurance organizations from SABIC’s Nansha and Shanghai, China manufacturing facilities. These individuals worked together to establish SABIC’s internal RoHS management system and prepared over 700 samples for RoHS testing and a CESI site audit in May of 2011. At the Shenzhen ceremony, SABIC received a total of 28 certifications covering 24,821 materials that are produced at the Nansha and Shanghai sites.
“SABIC’s role in protecting the environment will remain at the core of everything we do,” Leung added. “We will continue to invest in R&D in our drive for continuous improvement to develop newer, better and more advanced materials that will raise the sustainability bar.”
SABIC has had a long, rich history serving global electronics OEMs with industry-leading thermoplastics that have become the materials of choice in a broad range of electronics end product. These include, but are not limited to mobile telephones, laptops, and displays.
