Special Libraries Association (USA) Awards the TERI Library for Achievement and Excellence 2007
Mr. Debal C. Kar, Fellow, Library and Information Centre, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), was awarded with the SLA Diversity Leadership Development Program (DLDP) award for 2007 for his commitment and dedication to the profession.
Delhi, India, July 08, 2007 --(PR.com)-- The Special Libraries Association (SLA) based in Alexandria, USA, a nonprofit global organization for innovative information professionals awarded Mr. Debal C. Kar, Fellow, Library and Information Centre, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), with the SLA Diversity Leadership Development Program (DLDP) award for 2007 for his commitment and dedication to the profession.
Every year, the SLA honors individuals and organizations who have demonstrated achievement, excellence in fields of library and information science. In addition to this, it also has a SLA Diversity Leadership Development Program (DLDP) award which is sponsored by EBSCO. SLA serves more than 11,000 members in 75 countries in the information profession, including corporate, academic, and government information specialists.
Mr Kar besides being a technical expert on India’s library and information science, is also a sitting member on several government of India committees on library and information science and a board member of several of India’s leading library related associations. He has organized two International Conferences on Digital Libraries (ICDL) in 2004 and 2006 respectively. The first ICDL was the largest digital library conference in the world and its organization and conduct was widely appreciated. He has published 25 articles in refereed journals and presented papers in more than 20 conferences. Mr Kar became a member of the SLA in 2005 and shortly thereafter was elected Secretary of the Asian Chapter and is now its President-elect. Mr Kar has master’s degrees in Library Science and Philosophy and is currently pursuing his Doctorate from the University of Delhi.
Mr. Kar has been working with TERI’s Library and Information Centre (LIC) since 1986. The Library Information Centre at TERI maintains a pioneering research library – South Asia’s finest repository of reading on energy, environment, sustainable development, plant biotechnology, natural resources and forestry. Apart from being a traditional library with holdings of more than 23000 books and 850 print journals, the LIC also maintains a large number of e-resources and provides a wide range of information services. Recent additions include the development of an e-library with a collection of 760 e-journals, 450 e-documents/books, several reference resources and over 400 CDs. The e-library provides access to several important databases; various portals such as Indiastat.com, Indiapetro.com, Infraline.com; electronic version of Government documents; and annual reports, newsletters, and current and archived in-house journals.
