Sacramento, CA, October 06, 2012 --(PR.com)-- World ostomy day celebrated with free OSTOMY clinic and education day hosted by Sacramento Region ostomy nurses.

October 6th is World Ostomy Day and will be celebrated in the Sacramento area by the Sacramento Wound, Ostomy and Continence Practitioner Nurses with an all day free ostomy clinic and education day.

The clinic will be help at Sutter Cancer Center, 2800 L Street Suite 110, Sacramento, CA from 10AM to 2PM on Saturday, October 6, 2012. Activities will include free ostomy consultation by qualified Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses, educational and support materials, raffles, food and speakers including Dr. J. Myers (Colorectal Surgeon), John Richards (Pharm, D) and Randy Henniger (26 year colon cancer survivor and ostomate.)

Colon and urinary cancer surgeries often require the patients to receive permanent or temporary ostomies. Bowel diseases such as Crohns, Colitis and Inflamatory Bowel Disease are often resolved by the surgical removal of the patient’s diseased colon resulting in an ostomy. An ostomy is formed by the rerouting of the colon (colostomy) or small intestine (iliostomy) or ureters (urostomy) with a new opening (stoma) created in the patient’s abdomen. The result is the wearing of an ostomy appliance or “pouch.” These life saving surgeries are increasing the survival rate and quality of life for cancer and bowel disease patients.

The swocp is affiliated with the national organization of wocns. The Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society™, a professional nursing society that supports its members by promoting educational, clinical, and research opportunities to advance the practice and guide the delivery of expert health care to individuals with wounds, ostomies, and incontinence. http://www.wocn.org/
