Satellite Internet for Rural Clients in Australia

Remote regions in Australia are looking for internet on satellite services as a result of being cut-off from the terrestrial fibre networks. Local operators like NewSat Ltd, are looking at offering VSAT broadband to the locations.

Melbourne, Australia, October 12, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Despite the roll-out of the NBN, certain regions in Australia would still be beyond the reach of the project’s fibre footprint. Many of these regions are simply too remote for terrestrial networks to work. Unfortunately, some of these locations are considered home by rural communities and the geographic challenges posed by where they are residing has limited their access to broadband and as a consequence, to Internet applications.

The satellite communications specialist, NewSat, hopes to provide coverage to the last mile in the project by offering internet on satellite solutions. The VSAT broadband service is designed to be deployed in remote regions, and at present, relies on the teleport facilities in Perth and Adelaide operated by the company.

Aside from total turnkey solutions, the satellite broadband service can also be optimised by clients to suit their needs which may include remote Wide Area Networks or WAN, hosted services, and client applications. Currently, NewSat offers either high-throughput dedicated bandwidth or low-priced shared bandwidth.

Australia is still grappling with surging bandwidth prices to do demand for capacity that cannot be met because of the lack of any clear space policy. Recently, the government announced plans for the Satellite Utilisation Policy which will see the country focus on space technology rather than space activity as a policy. Government is still looking for ways to support the project despite a strained national budget weakened by the global economic crunch and domestic fears over the waning mining boom.

The NBN project hopes to provide high-speed broadband access across Australia. However, some premises are beyond the planned fibre network. Aside from its own interim satellite services, regional and international companies, like NewSat, are looking to provide the last mile coverage through internet on satellite.
