MEGT Trainee Takes a U-Turn in Her Career
When Catherine Nicola left school she thought she would be working in a hospital. But through her traineeship with MEGT at Sydney Water she has been working at a water treatment plant and as a Scheduling Assistant. And loves it.
Sydney, Australia, October 11, 2012 --(PR.com)-- It’s funny how life takes you in different directions. Catherine Nicola thought she was going to be a nurse. But now her experience as a Trainee with MEGT Group Training sees her as a finalist for the NSW Group Training Association Awards in the Utilities category. The Awards will be announced in October 2012.
Ms Nicola had been good at Biology at school but after a car accident, deferred her Bachelor of Nursing at uni and instead took up a Traineeship with MEGT Group Training where she was placed with Sydney Water.
“I was working as a Scheduling Assistant, booking training for 100+ people with Sydney Water and discovered I just liked organising things. I enjoyed working out on the wastewater treatment plants too. I was doing the laboratory work at Penrith and that was fun because it was using Biology that I did at school,” explains Ms Nicola. More recently, Ms Nicola has been an Admin Support Officer working across various departments.
“Being a multi-faceted organisation, Sydney Water has been able to provide Ms Nicola with the type of work rotation that Group Training is all about,” explains Rhonda, her MEGT Field Officer. This employment model assists and supports both the Trainee and the Host Employer at a time of great change and challenge in the life of a Trainee. It’s a time when they are seeking peer respect, managing their own income for the first time, managing a work-life balance and coming to grips with the obligations of being part of the workforce.
The Host Employer on the other hand gains assistance with payroll, mentoring and recruitment services provided by MEGT Group Training.
The Group Training Awards are not only a recognition of the strong work and study ethic Ms Nicola has demonstrated, but also showcase her Traineeship as an example of different and successful employment options for other young people.
Ms Nicola advises there are more opportunities available in a Traineeship than just going to uni can provide – a Traineeship gets you a job with the work experience employers are looking for, plus a qualification – and you get paid. She believes it gives you a better opportunity to get a permanent position at the end of the Traineeship.
