Metanoia, Inc. Spearheads Network-Centric Performance Management Initiative with Cisco, ADVA, TATA, LinkedIn, OPNET, and Others

Following its highly successful panel on end-to-end performance management in July, Metanoia, Inc., together with a dozen players from the eco-system, launched its Roundtables and activity on network-centric performance management last month. This unique initiative, exploring network-level issues that must be addressed to achieve the goal of end-to-end performance management and monitoring, involves wireline, data center, and OTT operators and culminates in a live panel at NANOG56 in Dallas.

Mountain View, CA, October 13, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Dr. Vishal Sharma, Principal, Metanoia, Inc. said from his Silicon Valley office, “For any operator today, it is not enough to be able to manage just their segment of the network (access, middle-mile or last-mile). Rather, with the diversity of applications and services, and the growth in mobile broadband in the first mile and data centers in the last mile, it is imperative for an operator to have cross-domain insights.

"Thus, an operator must not only know the performance of the network (latency, jitter, delay, loss, throughput/bandwidth, and availability) locally, but also how these parameters are affected by adjacent network segments, and how the network behavior, as a whole, affects application performance. While much has been discussed in various forums about application performance, there can be no application performance without sound network performance!”

Thus, network performance or monitoring of activities needed to keep the network up and running reliably and efficiently, are critical, especially in today’s dynamic networks. E.g. sync. in 3G and 4G/LTE backhaul networks, impairment detection, and fault isolation & notification to name a few.

The current discourse is examining end-to-end performance management & monitoring with a focus on network-level problems and measurements. Thus, the experts are considering the (horizontal) interactions between providers in different segments – access, middle-mile and last mile, and issues of sharing metrics across operator boundaries, which metrics are critical for network performance and why, and at how performance problems can be fixed efficiently and speedily.

Ning So, Head of Network Architecture at TATA and Zaid Ali, Senior Manager, Global Network Engineering & Operations at LinkedIn both pointed out that while there are many tools and techniques for performance management (advanced OAM, better sampling & aggregation methods, synthetic transactions, support in vendor systems, and sophisticated software), it is still very tricky to answer fundamental questions such as: Where did a performance problem originate? Who is responsible for it? How do we go about fixing it?

The NANOG56 panel will bring together key players from the carrier eco-system (e.g. Cisco, ADVA, OPNET, InfoVista, LinkedIn, TATA) to discuss, debate, and answer important questions on network-centric performance management. They encourage the interested professionals to join the community conversation at http://bit.ly/QFrnaQ, and participate actively.

Metanoia, Inc. (http://www.metanoia-inc.com) has been providing its expertise to players across the full telecom ecosystem (chip & semiconductor vendors, system vendors, operators & carriers, technology houses, and software/planning tool vendors) since 2001, and helping them solve complex problems. Our contributions have spanned the strategy for, and the analysis, design, and architecture of, systems, networks, and services, to the optimization of the equipment and networks deploying them.

Our contributions have allowed a marquee list of clients (ranging from fast-paced innovative startups and international leaders, to giants in the US Fortune 1000) across 4 continents to accelerate technology design and development or network design and deployment, speed-up time-to-market, slash learning cycles, master complex technologies, and enhance customer-interaction and revenues, yielding benefits many times their investments in our services.
