Breast Cancer Awareness Highlighted at Day Centennial This Month
This month, Day Automotive Group supports Breast Cancer Awareness and Making Strides against Breast Cancer
Pittsburgh, PA, October 18, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Pittsburgh, PA’s Day Automotive Group is proud to support the American Cancer Society in the Making Strides against Breast Cancer event this month. The Making Strides against Breast Cancer walk brings together breast cancer survivors with the community. All members participating in the walk also raise money for the American Cancer Society as well as raise awareness about the steps women can take to reduce the risk of getting breast cancer.
The Making Strides Walk began in 1984 when Massachusetts cancer survivor Margery Gould Rath was looking for a way to celebrate fellow cancer survivors while raising funds for the American Cancer Society. The first walk, held in Boston, drew 200 participants and instantly became an annual city tradition. Since then, the walk has brought together over 8 million walkers in more than 270 communities across the country. It has also raised more than $460 million to fight breast cancer.
This year, Day Automotive Group put together a team to support Making Strides against Breast Cancer. Members of the community are encouraged to donate to the great cause, helping more than 2.5 million breast cancer survivors celebrate another birthday this year.
On October 6, the Day Automotive Group walked in the Making Strides against Breast Cancer walk of Greater Pittsburg. Not only was the event fun, informative and inspiring, but all-together $126,511.75 was raised for the American Cancer Society.
Since Making Strides began, breast cancer death rates have declined 32 percent. The American Cancer Society uses the money raised to help save lives. One in every two women newly diagnosed with breast cancer reaches out to the American Cancer Society for help and support. They pride themselves in providing transportation assistance, free lodging, workshops to teach beauty techniques, emotional support programs, cancer education classes, online cancer survivor support network and much more.
A large part of funds raised for the American Cancer Society is also invested in research to find, prevent, treat and cure all types of cancer. As a result, they have played a role in nearly every major breast cancer research breakthrough in recent history. This includes establishing mammography as the standard for breast cancer screening, discovering lifesaving treatments, and better understanding factors that can reduce the risk of getting the disease.
