Synopsis of “Exile by Choice”
Conor Girard, aka Roaming Bear chooses to be homeless. As a struggling artist/musician bear writes in his songs “it’s not that I’m opposed to work, just not as part of this fascist machine.” Morris, Stakenas and company met Bear a number of years ago in high school. Fallen with depression and alcoholism, Bear has spent the majority of the past 6 years traveling the countryside as a modern day hobo; hopping trains, hitch hiking, eating out of garbage dumpsters, sleeping under viaducts and generally living on nothing, caught in a sad web of personal destruction. BRF documents Bears first trip sober with Mikey, a troubled 18 year old looking to find his way amidst a bleak future. Bear picks up small amounts of money playing music on street corners and carving jewelry out of buffalo horns. In his travels Bear visits people he has spent time with who are still caught up in homelessness, drugs and contempt. On this journey Bear meets new people who are looking to help as they travel from the downtrodden burrows of New Orleans to Utah, California and Seattle; all by train or hitch hiking. Bear gets reacquainted with family and friends along the way, some only accepting him if he is sober, others offering drugs and alcohol. The documentary has been submitted to Sundance, Slamdance, Palm Springs film festivals among others. Due to festival requirements, the November 15th screening will not be considered a premier and is considered a test screening, for those that attend, we ask that they not write any articles or reviews online or in print. We are looking to raise money to support the efforts of BRF to get this movie into distribution to be shared with the general public. The plan is to take a portion of the proceeds of the movie and donate it back to helping those on the road or lost in life.
