Colored Rocks Opens 2013 Competition to Award $5,000 in Prizes to Male Students of Color

Atlanta, GA, October 21, 2012 --(PR.com)-- The Colored Rocks Foundation has announced it is now accepting applications from Georgia’s high school male students of color who want to be considered for the 2013 Colored Rocks Prize. The second annual competition opens October 20, 2012. Once again, the Foundation will award $5,000 in prize money, along with the honor of being named a Colored Rock.

The Colored Rocks Prize is open to male students of color who are attending high school in Georgia. The competition is limited to those students scheduled to graduate with the class of 2013. Fifteen prizes will be awarded ranging from $3500 (First Place) to $50 (Honorable Mention).

Contestants will be judged on their written composition answering a thought provoking question. Included in each composition must be a plan for the applicant to use his talent to complete a project that benefits one of his struggling peers. All announced winners must complete their project and graduate from high school before receiving their award.

“Our first Colored Rocks class produced an admirable pool of ethnic talent that committed to a diverse set of mentoring projects,” offered Cheryl Dukes, executive director of the Colored Rocks Foundation. “The projects, designed by our awardees, either helped students who were struggling do better or helped them take their game to a higher level (if they were already on the right path). It was inspiring to see these accomplished young men investing so unselfishly in the success of their peers and mentees.”

The Colored Rocks Prize is a cash award. Although 100% of the Honorees in the first class of Colored Rocks have matriculated at an institute of higher learning, winners do not have to use their prize money for college. They may use it for whatever purpose they desire.

About the Colored Rocks Prize
Almost one out of three young men of color do not graduate from Georgia high schools. In fact, Georgia suffers as one of 5 states with the worst high school graduation rates in the country.

The Colored Rocks Foundation administers The Colored Rocks Prize – a Prize awarded to distinguished male students of color at Georgia High Schools. The Foundation’s intent is to help increase the numbers of male African Americans, Native Americans, Asian Pacific Americans, Latino Americans and Multi-Racial Americans completing high school and using their talent to make a positive impact on their peers. All Prize winners have committed to helping at least one of their struggling peers graduate from high school. The foundation expects to expand the awards beyond Georgia as the foundation grows.
