Inaugural World AIDS Day Concert in Downtown Los Angeles Hosted by AIDS Research Alliance, Presented by Kaiser Permanente
Los Angeles, CA, November 14, 2012 --(PR.com)-- On Friday, November 30th, AIDS Research Alliance (ARA) will host an inaugural World AIDS Day Concert at The Colburn School in downtown Los Angeles, across from the Walt Disney Concert Hall. This community event will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Zipper Hall. Emmy Award winner, LeVar Burton, Master of Ceremonies, will deliver a reading on the historic significance of World AIDS Day. Dr. David Hardy, Director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and Professor of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, the keynote speaker, will address the impact of HIV/AIDS in Los Angeles and globally. Performances by internationally award-winning Calidore String Quartet and the Colburn Woodwind Ensemble will begin at 8:00 p.m. This community World AIDS Day commemoration is free and open to the public.
Honored guests for this World AIDS Day Concert will be Oscar de La O, president of BIENESTAR, the largest Latino AIDS Service Organization in the nation; Dr. Michael Gottlieb, the discoverer of HIV; and Mr. Bruno de Rísios Bath, Consul General of Brazil in Los Angeles. Kaiser Permanente is the concert’s Presenting Sponsor. Community partners include the City of Los Angeles, The Colburn School, Bienestar Human Services, AIDS Project Los Angeles, The Black AIDS Institute, Alliance for Housing and Healing, the OASIS Clinic, the Consulate General of Brazil in Los Angeles, In the Meantime Men’s Group, Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute, Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center, UCLA Center for Clinical AIDS Research and Education, UCLA Center for AIDS Research, and the UCLA Vine Street Clinic.
World AIDS Day began in 1987, when two officials of the Global Programme on AIDS at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland [now known as UNAIDS], first proposed the idea. Since then, government and health officials around the world observe World AIDS Day each year on December 1st with speeches and proclamations to raise awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus [HIV]. In 1993, President Bill Clinton issued a proclamation making December 1st World AIDS Day. The issuance of presidential World AIDS Day proclamations has been adopted by President Barack Obama who, in 2011, called on all Americans to “stand with the individuals and communities affected by HIV and recommit to progress toward an AIDS free generation.”

About the Calidore String Quartet
One of the most exciting young ensembles to emerge on the chamber music scene in recent years, the international prize-winning Calidore String Quartet (violinists Jeffrey Myers and Ryan Meehan, violist Jeremy Berry, and cellist Estelle Choi) is noted for its fiery brilliance, breadth of musicianship, and palpable energy that engages audiences. Formed at the prestigious Colburn School Conservatory of Music in 2010, the Calidore String Quartet has presented recitals across the United States and Europe to great acclaim.
The Calidore String Quartet has been recognized by international juries for its technical brilliance and compelling musicianship. Most recently the quartet captured top prizes at the 61st ARD Munich International String Quartet Competition and the 2012 Hamburg International Chamber Music Competition. As a result, the quartet’s performances and interviews were broadcast on Bayerischer Rundfunk (Munich) and Norddeutscher Rundfunk (Hamburg). Furthermore, the quartet was featured on German national television as part of a documentary produced by ARD public broadcasting. Nationally, the Calidore String Quartet has won the grand prize in major chamber music competitions, including the 2011 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and the 2012 Coleman and Chesapeake International Chamber Music Competitions.
The quartet members have collaborated with many esteemed artists and ensembles including the Tokyo, St. Lawrence, and Cavani String Quartets, Joshua Bell, Joseph Silverstein, Menahem Pressler, and John Perry, among others. Teachers and mentors of the Calidore String Quartet include Paul Coletti, Ronald Leonard, Robert Lipsett, Arnold Steinhardt, Guillaume Sutre, Andre Roy and the Quatuor Ebène.
