Casey Subaru is a Proud Sponsor of JDRF’s Walk to Cure Diabetes
JDRF’s annual Walk to Cure Diabetes takes place in over 250 locations across the country. The Casey Auto Group is proud to sponsor the two local walks, in Virginia Beach and Newport News.
Newport News, VA, October 25, 2012 --(PR.com)-- The Walk to Cure Diabetes is an annual fundraising event held by The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). This year, the Casey Auto Group is a proud sponsor of the JDRF Hampton Roads chapter walks; one in Virginia Beach, and one in Newport News.
The Virginia Beach walk took place October 20, 2012, and helped raise over $100,000 to benefit diabetes research. The Peninsula walk will take place October 27, 2012, in Newport News. Participants can form walking teams, or walk as individuals. Registration for the walk begins at 9:00 a.m., and the walk officially starts at 10:00 a.m. The Peninsula walk has a more modest fundraising goal of $50,000, which JDRF expects to meet by walk day on Saturday.
According to JDRF, approximately 80 people per day are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. That’s in addition to the 3 million people who already suffer from the disease. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that can be hereditary, and symptoms can appear at any age and any time. Unlike type 2 diabetes, type 1 has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle choices. Those affected by the disease must test their blood sugar levels up to 6 times a day, and must carefully monitor food intake to ensure their insulin doses are well balanced. Type 1 diabetes is manageable, but currently incurable, and JDRF aims to find a cure for this life-threatening illness.
All walkers are welcome at the Walk to Cure Diabetes, regardless of whether they know anyone, or if they themselves are affected with type 1 diabetes. The walk encourages healthy activity while raising money for a cause. The walk is held at more than 225 locations across the United States, and is a big part of JDRF’s yearly fundraising goals.
