“Bible Storyland” Documentary Announces New York City Premiere at 2012 Crown Heights Film Festival
Film about 1960’s Bible theme park, designed by former Disneyland creatives, to be featured in Brooklyn-Based Film Festival in November.
Brooklyn, NY, October 25, 2012 --(PR.com)-- The filmmakers behind "Bible Storyland", a quirky independent documentary about an ill-fated 1960’s theme park designed by former Disneyland employees, announced the film’s New York City Premiere on November 3rd at the 2012 Crown Heights Film Festival in Brooklyn, NY. The subject of the film, Harvey Jordan, will attend and participate in a Q&A session after the screening.
"Bible Storyland" is a fun, offbeat film with elements of retro-Americana, Disneyland, The Wizard of Oz and Old Hollywood. It follows Los Angeles art dealer, Harvey Jordan, on his obsessive decade-long quest to uncover the mystery behind a Bible amusement park intended to open in Southern California in the early 1960’s. The more Jordan discovers, the more he is caught up in a web of unanswered questions that ultimately affect his family, his marriage, and his views on his own mortality.

The director of the film, Stephanie Hubbard, is a popular author and award-winning documentary film editor and producer whose shows have run on PBS, the Discovery Channel and the History Channel. "People don't usually think of documentaries as fun, weird and uplifting,” she says, "but this film is all that. It's an exploration of the stresses of domestic life, art-making and the strange intersection of theme parks and religion." Hubbard’s quirky sense of fun is apparent in her use of original animation, noir-style comic book images, video clips from The Simpsons and Cecile B. DeMille’s epic biblical films from the 1950's to set the tone and provide dramatic effect.
"Bible Storyland" includes interviews with retro pop-culture humorist Charles Phoenix, theme park historian Todd James Pierce, the grandson of Jack Haley (The Wizard of Oz’s Tin Man), music and TV producer Buddy Bregman (who recorded with Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Judy Garland), clergy and biblical scholars. About the Crown Heights Film Festival
The 3rd Annual Crown Heights Film Festival (CHFF) will take place October 30th through November 10th, 2012, at creative and performance spaces in Brooklyn, New York. The CHFF’s mission is to provide a voice and opportunities for filmmakers, to foster cross-arts collaboration, and to provide a social forum for filmmakers, Brooklyn residents, and the wider arts community.
CHFF is a collaboration between photographer/cameraman Pedro Martí and artist/curator Erin Gleason. The non-profit festival was founded in 2009 with the aim of creating a film-based social forum in Crown Heights – a rapidly changing neighborhood navigating a number of socio-economic issues including racial and cultural integration, local business growth, and police presence under “zero tolerance” directives. CHFF believes the community at large, through the medium of film, benefits from a festival that reflects the diversity Crown Heights embodies.
Each night of the festival is a unique journey through a variety of film genres including feature length and short narratives, documentaries, cross-disciplinary/ experimental films and animations. The curation of the festival is based on an international open call submission process. Young Filmmakers Day features films made by or for children and teenagers.
In addition to showcasing exceptional local and international films, the festival presents Q&A sessions, workshops, performances, and other opportunities for filmmakers to engage with the wider arts and Brooklyn communities. On closing night, CHFF presents best category awards for each film genre showcased. Each year, a different artist is invited to create the awards as unique artworks.
