About Deborah Ann Swanson, PH.D.
Dr. Swanson has over 20 years experience in the field of higher education. She is Professor Emeritus with the Department of English at San Francisco State University, California. She taught English with a Concentration in Composition Program for the Masters program. Dr. Swanson developed and/or revised and taught courses in pedagogy, theory and research methods to graduate students. She also served as Director of the University Upper-Division Writing Exam; Co-Coordinator of both the graduate and undergraduate Composition Programs; and was an advisor to, and director of various writing-across-the-disciplines assessment projects. During her professional life, she presented her research and pedagogical studies at more than 21 national conferences and participated in numerous invited presentations and workshops.
Dr. Swanson served as a Lecturer in English with San Francisco State University from 1977-1981 and as a Research Assistant with SRI International from 1989-1990. She most recently served as a Professor of English with San Francisco State University from 1990-2010, having retired in August 2010. Dr. Swanson has written and published numerous articles. She was born on April 22, 1952 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Dr. Swanson received her Ph.D. in English from Stanford University School of Education in 1993. In her spare time she enjoys reading, editing, volunteering at Best Friends animal sanctuary, and participating in political activities.
