Wharton Students Transform Epilepsy Blog

Philadelphia, PA, November 08, 2012 --(PR.com)-- The Wharton School and Living Well With Epilepsy launch new website just in time for Epilepsy Awareness Month in November.

Throughout the Fall 2012 semester, a group of Wharton students will be transforming a local blog on Epilepsy into a comprehensive website with the goal of diminishing stigma and increasing Epilepsy awareness. The site, www.LivingWellwithEpilepsy.com, currently only reaches a fraction of the more than 65 Million people worldwide living with Epilepsy. The students aim to create a site that will have a lasting impact on millions.

Epilepsy is a chronic neurologic disorder with many possible causes. The prevalence and mortality statistics are comparable to those of breast cancer. More importantly, the death toll resulting from Epilepsy and seizure-related causes this past year was higher than the number of deaths resulting from AIDS-related causes at the height of the AIDS crisis.

Jessica Keenan Smith, founder of Living Well With Epilepsy said, “In my first meeting with the Wharton students, I realized how excited these kids were to get involved in the project. It was inspiring to see how much they wanted to positively impact the lives of people living with Epilepsy.”

Ms. Smith has been living with Epilepsy since she was a teen. There is extreme stigma associated with Epilepsy, and general knowledge about the disorder is limited. As such, she started the blog in hopes that it would reach someone in need. She said, “The site has grown beyond anything I could have imagined.”

The new site will launch in November during Epilepsy Awareness Month. To celebrate, the students will throw a launch party on November 16. The event will be held at the University of Pennsylvania campus, including entertainment by featured GRAMMY-nominated artist, Jann Klose, who also sings in the movie, Greetings From Tim Buckley. The students and founder will commemorate this transformation with contributors, community leaders, medical professionals and people living with Epilepsy from throughout the Philadelphia area.
