Athens, OH, November 09, 2012 --(PR.com)-- The Friends of Athens Asylum Cemeteries have finalized the program for their third annual Veterans Day celebration at the cemeteries of the former Athens Asylum in Athens, Ohio, on November 10, 2012, at 1:00 p.m.
The site, now known as The Ridges, has nearly 1,700 graves in its cemeteries that are marked only with numbered stones which anonymously label the graves of civilian patients and veterans from the Spanish-American War, Civil War, and WWI. Forty-three veterans were honored for the first time at the 2nd annual celebration in 2011. More veterans known to be buried at this site await application for an identifying military memorial marker provided by the U.S. Government. Civilian stones are funded by families or via fundraisers conducted by FAAC.
The welcome message will be delivered by Tom Collins with Berta Lockhart, President of FAAC, also speaking. The main speaker for the event is Douglas McCabe, Curator of Manuscripts, Mahn Center for Archives and Special Collections, Ohio University. The second speaker is Laurel Lemke, Chair of the Grave Concerns Association of Lakewood, Washington. The event is rounded out with the presentation of the colors by the ROTC, Civil War Re-enactors, gun salutes and cannon volley, and Taps by Carolyn Cade. After hymns are sung by an area choir and a blessing is given by Pastor Diana Kinder, the public will be invited to participate in placing carnations on the graves.
Driving directions to The Ridges are from US 33, take the SR 682/Ohio University Exit. Go left onto Richland Avenue at the roundabout. Take the first right onto Dairy Barn Lane, then turn right into The Ridges. Go to the top of the hill. Parking is available near the main Ridges building, which is now Lin Hall-Kennedy Museum of Ohio University. Follow the signs to walk up the hill to Cemetery #1. (Parking is not available next to the cemetery.) Shuttles will be available.
The Friends of Athens Asylum Cemeteries is a group of private citizens who are working to place memorial markers on all of the numbered graves at the asylum cemeteries at The Ridges in Athens, Ohio, as well as to identify and honor each veteran buried there. The cemeteries are owned by the Ohio Department of Mental Health and maintained by the National Alliance on Mental Illness. The buildings and remaining property are owned by Ohio University.
