Secure Site Design: Bayer MaterialScience Blast-Protection Solution for Building Facades Protects Critical Facilities and Personnel
High-performance Hygard® Sentinel protective facade incorporating transparent polymer laminate and innovative energy absorbers significantly reduces blast forces to buildings.
New Orleans, LA, November 12, 2012 --(PR.com)-- With ever-increasing threats and always-decreasing budgets in mind, Bayer MaterialScience LLC has developed an innovative blast-mitigating system for critical buildings and other structures that can be tailored to protect against a range of threat levels. The Hygard polycarbonate laminate system can be added to existing buildings to avoid the high costs of relocating or building new, more secure structures.
The system combines the aesthetics and impact resistance of Hygard EX1750 transparent polycarbonate laminate panels with a high-strength, energy-absorbing steel mounting structure. The system’s effectiveness is further enhanced through the use of innovative, highly dampened, out-of-phase, energy absorbers that significantly reduce blast forces to the building. Open-arena blast testing has demonstrated the capabilities of this system to protect a building from significant blast pressures. Both far-field and near-field charge locations can be mitigated.
This technology, including open-arena blast test results, is the topic of “New Developments in a Blast-Mitigating System Made of Laminated Polycarbonate for Exterior Building Protection,” presented at the Shock and Vibration Symposium held in New Orleans. Authors of the paper are Jim Lorenzo, principle engineer; Robert Pyles, program manager; and Karl Wiecking, emerging market manager, all of Bayer MaterialScience LLC.
