International Cycling Union Pushes for Equal Prize Lists for Women in Cycling Cups
The International Cycling Union, after a three-day meeting, has approved the proposal to make the championship prizes for women's races equal to those for the men's events.
Cumbria, United Kingdom, November 21, 2012 --(PR.com)-- After a three-day meeting in Switzerland, the International Cycling Union or ICU approved the proposal to make the prize lists equal for both men and women events. The said decision will be implemented during the upcoming UCI Road World Championships that will take place in Ponferrada, Spain in 2014.
Furthermore, the athletes' commission is calling on teams in the UCI WorldTour to invest in and encourage more female groups to join the races and for organisers to offer more events to women.
This endeavour is part of ICU's attempt to improve the image of the sport of cycling, which has been put under bad light by a number of doping cases, including the highly-publicised case involving the American cyclist Lance Armstrong.
Other new provisions where also discussed during the meeting, such as implementation of stronger punishments for teams found guilty of using performance enhancement drugs. Sanctions for the said offence will affect not only the riders but their whole entourage as well.
The ICU also made recommendations to increase the minimum wage of professional cyclists to help them fight the temptation to dope and let them live more comfortable lifestyles. This initiative includes the implementation of fair salary budgets for teams, thus reducing the financial gap between leaders and the other riders.
