LA Agency Canvas Atelier Wins Gold, Leading Sochi to Win 2014 Olympic Bid: Triumph for Global Creative Community and Award-Winning Director Rupert Wainwright

Los Angeles, CA, July 19, 2007 --(PR.com)-- American boutique ad shop Canvas Atelier (www.canvas.tv), working in conjunction with production companies DTV-MA, Moscow and XOVR, Los Angeles and in partnership with FCB-MA Moscow, lead an international team and worldwide ad campaign to support the Russian city of Sochi’s winning bid for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. The Canvas team was lead by award-winning director Rupert Wainwright and Adsmith/Founder Lee Nelson, who created, wrote and produced a stunning ad campaign titled “Russia -- The Door is Open” which aired in 142 countries around the world.

In a victory for global business, Canvas was brought in by FCB-MA after the Russia Olympic Bid committee rejected all other pitches, proving that the world still comes to LA for creativity and inspired advertising concepts.

The success of this campaign and international business partnership lead directly to the Black Sea resort of Sochi winning the battle for the 2014 Winter Olympics, bringing the global event to Russia for the first time.

Sochi beat the South Korean resort of Pyeongchang 51 votes to 47 in the final round of voting by the International Olympic Committee. This was a dramatic accomplishment for Russia, an Olympic power that has won 293 Winter Games medals but has never hosted the Winter Games, and an impressive feat for American creativity and global business.

“We are proud to be a part of the team that brought the Winter Olympic Games to Russia for the first time” says Nelson. “It’s unbelievably rewarding to see the positive impact of your work on a scale this large.”

Wainwright and Nelson spent 2 months in Russia writing, shooting and editing the commercial in both Moscow and Sochi. Parts were shot in Red Square and inside Kremlin ceremonial doors that have never been opened to the public before. Wainwright explains, "It was such an exciting experience to be shooting some of the most iconic Russian images and places -- and a wonderful way to meet Russia for the first time. The crew was amazing from beginning to end and it was wonderful working hand-in-hand with FCB Moscow, to create the spot from the very start to the end. Obviously we all owe a big debt of gratitude to Oxana Mishina - who introduced us to Russia, FCB and the Olympic bid."

Rupert Wainwright is best known for his 1999 feature film, Stigmata, starring Patricia Arquette, Gabriel Byrne and Jonathan Pryce in addition to his most recent feature The Fog. Wainwright continues to successfully straddle the worlds of features and commercials with unique visual style and a driving sense of storytelling
