Chassis Plans to Provide 100 Configured Rugged Computers to Long Island Rail Road
Chassis Plans inks deal with Long Island Rail Road to provide 100 modified COTS/Industrialâ„¢ computer systems to upgrade LIRR Audio/Visual Paging Systems.
San Diego, CA, July 20, 2007 --(PR.com)-- Chassis Plans announced today that they have been selected to provide over 100 rugged computer platforms to the Long Island Rail Road as part of an effort to upgrade the Audio/Visual Paging Systems currently in use and deploy to an additional 80 stations. Chassis Plans was awarded this contract due in large part to their extensive experience in providing rugged rack mount computer systems for use in harsh environments.
Utilizing standard COTS computer components, and housing them in a slightly modified version of their standard 4U COTS/Industrial™ rack mount enclosure, Chassis Plans was able to propose a robust system which is truly “Fit-For-Use” in the high shock, high vibration and extreme particulate matter environment LIRR needs to field these systems into.
"By providing a platform with low total cost of ownership and backed by our world-class engineering and support teams, Chassis Plans fully met the criteria established by LIRR for this challenging requirement." said Steve Travis, Chassis Plans VP for Program Management. "We provide a low risk, very reliable partner to LIRR for this high visibility application and the customer recognized that value.”
Chassis Plans is providing a semi-custom 4U enclosure designed with shock isolation for an operating vibration specification of 5 to 500Hz at 1G and 10G of operational shock. The operating temperature limits of 49 deg C and 90% humidity are not that challenging as compared to some environments Chassis Plans systems are deployed into. The system has a 20-inch depth limit and a maximum weight, integrated, of 40 pounds. Each system provides a 3.2GHz P4 with 2GB of Ram, an 8GB solid state hard drive, and two serial ports as well as a high end audio processor for station paging.
About Long Island Rail Road
MTA Long Island Rail Road is the busiest commuter railroad in North America, carrying an average of 282,400 customers each weekday on 728 daily trains. Chartered on April 24, 1834, it is also the oldest railroad still operating under its original name. Throughout that time, the LIRR has been an essential component of the region's transportation infrastructure, leading to the development of the Long Island communities it serves and providing a gateway to the economic growth of the region. A subsidiary of New York State's Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the MTA Long Island Rail Road marked its 170th Anniversary in 2004.
The LIRR system is comprised of over 700 miles of track on 11 different branches, stretching from Montauk -- on the eastern tip of Long Island -- to the refurbished Penn Station in the heart of Manhattan, approximately 120 miles away. Along the way, the LIRR serves 124 stations in Nassau, Suffolk, Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan, providing service for some 81 million customers each year, taking them to and from jobs, homes, schools, sporting events, concerts, beaches, Broadway shows, and the multitude of other attractions around the New York metropolitan region.
