Atlanta Technical College Named the Top Technical College in Georgia
Atlanta, GA, December 12, 2012 --(PR.com)-- The State Board of the Technical College System of Georgia has chosen Atlanta Technical College as their college of the year for 2012.
Dr. Lynn Cornett, chair of the TCSG board, presented Atlanta Technical College President Alvetta Thomas with the Perdue Award for the TCSG Technical College of the Year during the board’s monthly meeting in Atlanta on December 6.
“Our board is proud to give President Thomas, her faculty and staff, and all of the students of Atlanta Technical College this award as Georgia’s technical college of the year,” said Cornett. “Their many accomplishments continue to build upon to the college’s great history of success and its vital role in training the workforce for business and industry throughout the Atlanta region. Atlanta Technical College delivers an outstanding level of student-centered service that changes lives, launches careers, and fills Georgia’s workforce with the highly-skilled graduates that employers demand.”
The award is named in honor of former Governor Sonny Perdue, who has been a strong supporter of Georgia’s technical colleges and their mission to develop the state’s workforce through world-class technical and adult education programs.

We prepare students academically so that as graduates, they are ready to make immediate and lasting contributions to business and industry, and to their communities."
Each year, the TCSG State Board evaluates the system’s 25 technical colleges for the Perdue Award using almost two dozen performance categories, including enrollment in technical and adult education programs, student retention and graduation rates, licensure pass rates, national awards, and administrative efficiencies.
TCSG Commissioner Ron Jackson had high praise for the work of President Thomas and her college’s faculty and staff. “Everyone at Atlanta Technical College, from President Thomas and her faculty and staff, to all of the students and the college’s many supporters, should be very proud of this award,” said Jackson. “They can deservedly say that they are the year’s top college in what we know is the best technical college system in the nation.”
Atlanta Technical College enrolled 8,219 students in credit classes during the past academic year, making it the eighth-largest enrollment in the TCSG. The college produced 1,562 graduates in certificate, diploma and degree programs during the year, which was 23 percent more than the previous year. It was the highest increase in graduates of all of the TCSG colleges.
The college had high student retention and graduation rates during the 2012 school year. In addition, nine in ten Atlanta Technical College graduates who took state licensure exams passed those tests during the past year.
The college is also focused on helping more GED graduates transition on to a technical college education. In 2012, one in three adult learners who obtained their GED diploma through Atlanta Technical College’s GED testing site chose to enroll in college classes.
President Thomas and her faculty and staff were also good stewards of taxpayer dollars in 2012. They efficiently managed their state appropriation by lowering the college’s administrative costs without reducing student access to instructional programs, classrooms and technology.
The two other finalists for the award were Albany Technical College and Athens Technical College.
Previous winners of the Perdue Award were Ogeechee Technical College (2011) and Wiregrass Georgia Technical College (2010).
