“I Am Special” Disability Challenge Fundraiser Kicks Off in Austin
Easter Seals Central Texas and The Robert V. Miller Fund Partner to Raise Money for Adults with Disabilities
Austin, TX, July 26, 2007 --(PR.com)-- Easter Seals Central Texas and the Robert V. Miller Fund announced a new fundraising challenge earlier this month that will provide camp scholarships to adults with disabilities. The “I Am Special” Disability Challenge encourages the Central Texas community to sponsor their own unique fundraisers in their office, professional and social clubs or neighborhoods.
The launch of this inaugural fundraising campaign was announced on the front steps of the Texas State Capitol on June 27. State Representative Valinda Bolton and former NFL player Jeff Blake expressed their support of the campaign and of the two organizations promoting it. The “I Am Special” Disability Challenge will culminate in a celebratory event on July 28 and will honor the birthday of Robert V. Miller, who passed away in 2005. Companies that have already signed up for the challenge include the Texas Wranglers, Adam’s Personal Training and neighborhood group Furlong Friends.
“We are honored to work with the Miller family and to add Easter Seals Camp for Adults with Disabilities to our repertoire,” said Easter Seals Central Texas President and CEO Kevin T. Coleman. “We pride ourselves in Camp ESKIMO, our children’s camp, and hope to enjoy the same success with the adult camps.”
Easter Seals Camp for Adults with Disabilities provides individuals with disabilities the chance to experience social and recreational activities in a camp setting while giving respite to their families and caregivers. The pilot camp, which was held in May in Gonzales, Texas, was a complete success. Scholarships were awarded to every camper who needed one. The next camp is scheduled for the week of October 28, 2007 in Bruceville, Texas.
“This camp became our family’s vision after seeing how much Robert enjoyed his camp experiences as a child and young adult,” said Sharon Miller. “We want to provide the same amazing experience to other individuals with disabilities. Easter Seals Central Texas was the logical partner for this effort.”

About The Robert V. Miller Fund
Sharon and Jerry Miller started The Robert V. Miller Fund in honor of their son Robert who passed away in September 2005 from complications stemming from neonatal adrenal leukodystrophy. Robert and his brother Ben both enjoyed camp experiences for people with disabilities as children and young adults. Robert’s laughter and joyful spirit at these camps prompted the Millers to begin the Robert V. Miller Fund, which provides scholarships for campers to attend Easter Seals Camp for Adults with Disabilities.
