Meanwhile, Sydney was voted Australia's favourite city, taking the crown from last year's winner, Melbourne-by just a single vote. Queensland was the top-scoring state, winning a staggering seven awards followed by New South Wales that took out five.
The awards were announced on Tuesday, December 04th at the Australian Traveller Readers' Choice Awards 2012 held at Ivy, Sydney, featuring 200 Australian leisure and travel industry stakeholders. These awards are the only tourism awards by consumers in Australia. More than 1000 readers of Australian Traveller nominated their favourite travel experiences and destinations across the country in a survey consisting of 22 categories carried out by the magazine during a period of four months.
Georgia Rickard, the editor at the Australian Traveller magazine, said, "Being voted by travellers themselves, the survey results are an accurate mark of what Australians recognise as the best adventures and destinations, and which leisure operators are excelling in their field. It's also an indication of domestic travel trends for 2013."
Simon Ambrose, the chief executive officer at Augusta Margaret River Tourism Association, said he was excited to hear the announcement. He noted that the fact that the award is chosen by travellers themselves is a testament to the top quality tourism experiences offered by Margaret River and its surrounding areas.
Mr Ambrose said, "This is an outstanding accolade – to be voted Best Town in Australia for the second year in a row is just phenomenal," before adding, "The Margaret River region is a world class tourism destination, and the entire region from Busselton to Augusta can be proud of this achievement."
He further noted, "We are delighted that the readers of Australian Traveller cherish Margaret River as much as we do – the region offers such diversity of experiences, from world class food and wine, adventure activities, to pristine beaches and stunning natural attractions."
