Local Cancer Treatment Center to Donate Christmas Gifts to Cancer Patient and Her Family

WellSpring Oncology is giving the Curry family the Christmas they could never have.

Pinellas Park, FL, December 21, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Local cancer treatment center WellSpring Oncology is spreading holiday cheer this month, providing holiday gifts to patients and their families in need. This year, 33-year-old Kristy Curry and her four children are getting the Christmas they never could have dreamed of three months ago.

When Kristy Curry was first diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2011, she had no idea what to expect. After two surgeries, she thought the ordeal was over. But this October, the cancer came back.

“I lost my health insurance shortly after my surgeries and ended up missing follow up appointments because I just couldn’t afford it,” says Curry. “Then, I started to have sharp pains near my pelvic bone in my lower back and knew I had to get checked again.”

Three hospital stays later, she heard the news: the cancer was back and had metastasized to her bone. The news was devastating to Curry, but she knew she had to fight it. She is currently receiving chemotherapy, as well as radiation treatment with WellSpring Oncology.

“When I had my first treatment with WellSpring, I walked in crying and all upset. Bills were coming due and I couldn’t pay them, we didn’t have a tree, we really didn’t have anything,” says Curry. “But the staff talked me through it as if they were my best friends, giving me hope.”

Every holiday season, the Pinellas cancer treatment facility’s Giving Tree program adopts a local family in need to provide the Christmas they never could’ve had. Fundraisers throughout the year benefit the Giving Tree fund to help patients like Curry. This year, the Giving Tree fund is partnering with a local Walgreens to give other cancer patients gift cards for the holidays.

“I’m not the type of person that would ever ask for help,” Curry says. “But my husband has been taking off work to be with me during my treatments and the thought of not being able to provide my family with Christmas was devastating.”

The Curry’s have four boys, ages 8-15. WellSpring Oncology knew about the family’s situation and asked Curry to put together a wish list for the children.

“My children have been so supportive during the entire process,” Curry says. “My 15-year-old is always researching treatments online and now wants to become a doctor to cure cancer. The children all went through counseling to help explain what Mommy was going through. Even my 8-year-old gets involved; giving me hugs and kisses every day, since the counselor told him that was the best way to help. My children have been through so much and I’m forever grateful for WellSpring Oncology providing the Christmas they deserve.”

The presents will picked up at WellSpring on Christmas Eve, Thursday, December 24, 2012.
