MediPurpose Endorses 11th Annual International Sharps Injury Safety Month
Company's Safety Medical Devices Designed to Prevent Accidental Needlestick Injuries
Atlanta, GA, December 28, 2012 --(PR.com)-- MediPurpose(tm), a master distributor and manufacturer of medical products, today announced its endorsement of the 11th Annual International Sharps Injury Prevention Month.
Promoted by the International Sharps Injury Prevention Society (ISIPS), the sharps injury awareness campaign is launched every December 1 in conjunction with World AIDS Day.
According to the United States Department of Labor's Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), a sharps injury -- also known as a needlestick injury -- is a wound caused by a needle that accidentally punctures the skin. Accidental puncture by a contaminated needle can spread blood-borne diseases, including HIV and hepatitis B & C.
Approximately 80 percent of needlestick injuries can be prevented, according to ISIPS Executive Director Ron Stoker.
"Sharps injuries create an enormous health and economic problem even without subsequent infection," Stoker said in a media release. "There are increasing numbers of incidents where workers are pricked by needles or other sharp instruments that may have been in contact with infected blood or other body fluids. Most of these injuries can be prevented."
MediPurpose manufactures and distributes two single-use "safety" medical devices -- SurgiLance(tm) safety lancets and babyLance(tm) safety heelsticks -- that are designed to prevent accidental needlestick injuries.
About SurgiLance Safety Lancets
MediPurpose introduced SurgiLance safety lancet in 1999. Its single-use design protects users from needlestick injuries before and after activation.
Valued for its safety, comfort, and ease of use, the SurgiLance safety lancet is one of the top-selling fingerstick devices in the United States and is available to healthcare professionals worldwide through a broad network of distributors.
The SurgiLance portfolio currently features seven unique models, ranging from 18-28 gauges and 1.0-2.3 mm penetration depths.
About babyLance Infant Heelsticks
Introduced in 2010, an all-new babyLance safety heelstick was launched in 2012. As with SurgiLance, babyLance's single-use design protects users from sharps injuries before and after activation.
Used by neonatal caregivers to collect blood samples from infants, babyLance features an ergonomic design to provide a secure and stable grip, helping to deliver a consistent incision without damaging the baby's tender nerve fibers.
babyLance is available in two models:
* The babyLance BLP (Preemie), which delivers an incision depth of 0.85 mm.
* The babyLance BLN (Newborn), which delivers an incision depth of 1.00 mm.
