Yellow Peril Gallery is pleased to present VANISH, a collection multi-media photography, video and installation by Maralie. The exhibition is the first in a two-part series of emerging artist exhibitions curated by Marcel McVay.
Think back to rising this morning, the journey you took to get from where you started your day to where you are now. You may be in bed, or at the far end of that two-hour commute. Either way, that path was full of any number of unseen subtleties, smells, sights, or movements – even ghosts of past events or premonitions of potential.
These moments are where Maralie’s exhibition VANISH might take place. Through a number of new media techniques and technologies, her work brings us closer to the unseen. Manipulated photographs read initially as the backside of an old Fujifilm 4×6 print – containing who knows what on its front-side. Upon closer inspection there is more than it initially seemed. A flooded and multi-sensory video manipulates forms beyond recognition, hidden pasts re-integrated into a visceral and reconfigured now.
Maralie brings with her a rich personal connection to multimedia art. Having performed with avant-garde, experimental sound and performance groups for over a decade, she performs still with her husband and collaborator Eli V Manuscript as Humanbeast (scheduled to perform during the opening of VANISH). This connection lends a performative quality to all of her work – a rich and necessary contradiction as she works toward an experience of her own absence, to do the impossible, to VANISH.
VANISH will run at Yellow Peril Gallery from Friday, January 18 to Sunday, February 10, 2013. Opening Reception and one-time performance by Humanbeast is Friday, January 18 from 6PM – 9PM. Gallery hours are Thursday and Friday, 3PM – 8PM, and Saturday and Sunday, 12PM – 5PM. Other days by appointment.
About Maralie
Maralie is a Providence-based multi-media and performance artist. She received her BFA in Sculpture from the Kansas City Art Institute and her MFA in Digital+Media from Rhode Island School of Design. Her entrancement with liminality in cultures, genders, and technologies became the basis of her master’s thesis, Engendered Machines and Humanbeasts. Maralie’s background in sculpture, performance, textiles and experimental music all combine into multi-mediated works that examine the evolution of ritual and emotional expression through technology. Currently she performs as one half of Humanbeast with Eli V. Manuscript.
