Electric Bikes on Dragons' Den

Canadian e-bike manufacturer OHM Cycles will pitch its premium electric commuter and recreational bicycles on TV this Sunday, January 20th, at 8pm (8:30PM in NFLD) on CBC's Dragons' Den. The Dragons will test-ride the electric bicycles and decide if they want to invest in them. Says OHM CEO Michael DeVisser: "We have had customers tell us they literally felt like a superhero the first time they rode one of our bikes, so a test ride really gets across what is possible on an OHM."

Vancouver, Canada, January 20, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Michael DeVisser, CEO of Vancouver electric bike company OHM Cycles, will pitch his line of premium Canadian electric commuter and recreational bicycles on CBC’s upcoming episode of Dragons’ Den this Sunday, January 20th, 2013 at 8:00PM. Proving the OHM Cycles business model that test rides sell e-bikes, the Dragons quickly saw the benefits of OHMs after probing DeVisser about the electric bikes and giving one a test ride.

First to try an OHM was Dragon Bruce Croxon, an avid cyclist with a typical pre-ride attitude: "I'm a real cyclist – that's an electric bike, so I can't get any exercise on that." DeVisser explained how OHM electric bikes are pedal-assisted instead of completely motorized, so that riders always get exercise from pedalling, but can use the bike’s 4 different levels of assistance to choose how hard they want to work.

"Our customers have told us that they have literally felt like a superhero the first time they tried one of our bikes, so a test ride really gets across what is possible on an OHM bike," says DeVisser. "An 81-year-old man in Vancouver uses his OHM to ride 6 to 8 hours a day. We designed the bikes to make cycling possible and practical for almost every occasion and everyone."

The Dragons liked the appearance of the e-bikes and liked OHM’s idea for expansion, saying that they weren't very familiar with electric bicycles but liked how they shortened commuting time and helped cyclists keep pace with stronger riders.

Though DeVisser is keeping mum about his presentation's outcome, he will say, "It was one of the best experiences of my life. I'm very happy to have had the opportunity to present on Dragons' Den."

Having grown up in a hilly area of North Vancouver, DeVisser remembers having to bike to the top of a steep hill to get home every day, and still recalls how difficult it was, especially after a long ride. Riding mountain bikes for much of his life, he tried his first pedal-assisted e-bike in Beijing when he moved to China for a job. He saw people using e-bikes for commuting and running errands around the city, and thought they would be very useful in hilly areas back home.

DeVisser explains: "I saw a huge potential for electric bikes in North America, but I realized we would need a custom designed, purpose-built bike for the local market. I was fortunate to be able to meet with some top bike executives in Taiwan who liked OHM's business concept and also felt it was the right time to enter the market. At first it was difficult to introduce a new brand of bikes; however, now we have established OHM in the market as a leading supplier of high performance e-bikes."

OHM electric bikes feature a custom-designed lightweight frame, reinforced for extra strength and stability, as well as multiple frame sizes for best fit, to handle all-terrain riding and commuting. A center-mounted battery pack allows for the best weight distribution, while also being easy to install and remove, and convenient to take inside to recharge. Other quality components include an integrated LED lighting system, puncture proof tires, and hydraulic disc brakes for added safety.

In 2009, OHM Cycles was awarded the British Columbia Creative Achievement Award for its custom battery enclosure. The company is a proud proponent of going green with electric bikes—an eco-friendly solution to the world’s transportation and environmental changes

DeVisser’s plan was to utilize the Dragons’ investment to purchase more inventory and roll out more OHM Factory Store Retail Outlets in Canada and the United States, to provide customers with the best service experience and the opportunity to test ride the bikes.

“It takes years to develop this type of product,” says DeVisser. “We have been in business since 2005 and have established our brand as a high quality supplier of electric bicycles. We hope our appearance on Dragon’s Den will inspire people to test ride our exclusive design and experience firsthand the freedom that comes with riding an OHM bike.”
